Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Summer Youth Counselor position provides direct service to participants with a focus on inspiring youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their futures.  

 

This full-time, temporary position provides direct service to participants entering grades 8-9 in the Girls Inc. Eureka! program. Girls Inc. Eureka! is a five-year cohort-based program that provides girls with comprehensive STEM opportunities and personal development in pro-girl spaces. This person will focus on personal development programming for youth during the summer camp portion of Eureka!, in partnership with the University of Minnesota. Work locations include YWCA Midtown, University of Minnesota, and community site partners in the metro area.  

 

Hours

June 10-August 2nd 

Camp hours (June 24 through July 219, 2022) 

  • Monday - Thursday > 8:300-5:00pm 
  • Fridays > 8:30-3:00pm 

Non-camp hours (June 13-24 and July 25-29) 

  • Monday - Friday > 9:00am-5:00pm 

Hours subject to change slightly based on need 
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Implement comprehensive programming

  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate/co-facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities utilizing Girls Inc. and Girls & Youth curriculum 
  • Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused, and accessible to a diverse student body 
  • Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants 
  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with University of Minnesota personnel and other youth serving agencies 
  • Refer youth to other appropriate community resources as needed and as necessary 
  • Exude confidence and excitement around STEM topics and a willingness to support girls to see their potential STEM 

Administration 

  • Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance 
  • Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes 
  • Maintain the online data management system with a commitment to accuracy and regularity 
  • Assist with writing summaries of activities and impact of direct service on participants 

Seek continuous professional development 

  • Attend and participate in departmental and program team meetings 
  • Participate in educational activities and trainings to improve achievement of program goals 

RELATIONSHIPS

 

This position reports to the Girls Inc. Program Manager, who reports to the Girls Inc. Program Director.  The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth staff, University of Minnesota contacts, youth participants, and parents. Critical relationships will include University of Minnesota contacts and participants. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Required: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent and 18 years of age or older.  
  • One year+ of experience planning and facilitating effective, structured groups 
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills 
  • Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive groups  
  • Ability to carry out duties independently, as well as in a team setting 
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) 
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire 
  • Strong belief in YWCA and ability to convey its importance 

Preferred: 

  • Minimum of two years college or equivalent, and one year of experience working with youth from low-income and inner city families 
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong 
  • Experience in youth programming related to math, science, financial literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and/or positive decision making 
  • Previous experience working within a day-camp setting 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds 
  • Must provide own transportation and be able to travel to various YWCA Minneapolis locations, University of Minnesota, and community sites

  • Experience working with urban communities and diverse populations, cultures and economic experiences
  • Experience working with youth and facilitating effective, structured groups
  • Two years college or continuing education
  • Strong presentation, written and oral communication skills with demonstrated success in group facilitation and public speaking
  • Ability to carry out duties independently as well as in a team setting to meet desired goals
  • Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of people and styles and able to focus on the customer
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
  • Excellent planning organization and implementation skills
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Strong belief in the YWCA and ability to convey its importance
  • Exhibit commitment to social justice values and anti-oppression analysis

Preferred:

  • BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish, Somali, or Hmong.
  • Knowledge of youth development and gender-specific programming strategies
  • Experience in youth programming related to math, science, economic literacy, leadership development, pregnancy prevention, and positive decision-making.
  • Experience with data entry in online data management systems.
  • Experience working with young girls from low-income, diverse, and inner-city families.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites.

COMPENSATION: Range from $15.50-$17.00 per hour
