Community Service Officer (CSO) 

Description

Position held by a non-sworn civilian capable of full duty to assist the public, law enforcement officers and other personnel by performing a variety of public relations, technical, clerical and other activities related to law enforcement functions by performing the following duties.

Responds to low risk calls for service in the field by means of operating a city owned vehicle.

Writes police reports stemming from citizens in the field, on the phone and/or at the police department.

Directs traffic.

Collects evidence.

Investigate private property accidents.

Refers to city services.

Maintains visibility by patrolling assigned area, city streets, parks, neighborhoods and business to ensure security.

Assists fellow officers' in documenting case information.

Respond to questions, complaints, and requests for information by telephone or in person from merchants, community/civic organizations, the general public, employees, superiors and other individuals.

Take and relay messages and/or direct calls or questions to appropriate personnel.

Return calls as necessary.

Assist in the response to critical incidents, special events and storm related events as needed.

Understands and uses agency's electronic reporting system to ensure full compliance with GEARS (Georgia Electronic Accident Reporting System).

Attends court.

Attends fires or accidents in assigned area and gives all possible assistance to Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services

Monitors for automobile parking in restricted areas and issues citations to violators when necessary.

Operates two-way radio to dispatch patrol cars to the scene of a disturbance or crim

Accepts all complaints and commendations from citizens to be properly submitted to professional standards.

 
Position Requirements

Must have a high school diploma

Must have typing skills and be capable of using standard office equipment.

Must have capability of dealing effectively with public.

Good communications skills a must; written and verbally.

Should be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Should have the ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.

Must be able to maintain security and confidentiality of all information.

Assist public in getting reports and obtaining information.

Must be willing to be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record.

Must be willing to submit to a voice stress analysis and submit to a psychological evaluation.

Must posses or be able to obtain a valid Driver’s License.

Must demonstrate on and off duty conduct that does not bring discredit to the officer, the department or the city.

 
Physical/Environmental Requirements Will be in outdoor elements including extreme heat,cold,rain,wind,etc. Subjected to all sorts of drugs/fumes/hazards therein. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Mobility to work office/field settings using standard office equipment is required. Vision to read printed materials/computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the phone.
