Description

The Interpretive Naturalist is a full-time, year-round commitment to creating remarkable, personalized nature experiences for the Mountain Air community. This organized nature team member coordinates and markets educational programs and keeps Mountain Air’s natural resources operations running smoothly. The 40-hour/week schedule parallels seasonal vacation activity; when other people play, we work. The schedule includes 1 weekend day as well as occasional holidays and evenings. The pay range is $38,000-$41,000, depending upon experience.

The ideal candidate possesses a bachelor’s or associate degree in natural science, education, or a related field or commensurate experience in science communication, and at least two years of experience working with groups of children and/or adults. Enthusiasm for delivering high service standards in a hospitality setting is essential.

  1. Lead interpretive walks and hands-on nature programs for community members.
  2. Through social media, website presence, and e-newsletters, enhance community engagement with nature and garden activities.
  3. Share coverage of indoor responsibilities including administrative and interpretive tasks.
  4. Coordinate daily upkeep of ODC including caring for resident animals, tending to the wildlife garden, and updating educational exhibits.
  5. Create and sustain a welcoming, compelling indoor environment for ODC visitors.
  6. Develop and implement an annual calendar of nature-based educational programs for Mountain Air Country Club members and guests.
  7. Provide customized expert wildlife and forestry consultation to the Mountain Air community, including but not limited to flora and fauna identification and interpretation, and management of nuisance wildlife issues.
  8. Create and maintain organizational and administrative systems to support nature programs and community garden operations.
  9. Assist with the hiring, training, and leading of seasonal and part-time employees.
  10. Maintain inventory and merchandise systems through a computer-based point-of-sale system.
  11. Aid in the coordination of Mountain Air’s emergency response procedures.
  12. Thoroughly locate, identify, and record the flora and fauna of Mountain Air, through ongoing field surveys.
  13. Represent Mountain Air positively and professionally to the Yancey County community, professional organizations, members, guests, and other employees.
  14. Work independently and cooperatively as part of a collaborative, creative team.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Energetic, engaging, and enthusiastic disposition.
  2. Knowledge of southern Appalachian flora and fauna.
  3. Comfortable working in a country club environment.
  4. Excitement about nature-based apps such as iNaturalist, eBird, and Seek, used to promote community science projects and collect data.
  5. Proficiency with various software packages and platforms such as Publisher, Excel, Word, Instagram, and Facebook.
  6. Attention to detail in written, spoken, and graphic communication.
  7. Personal outdoor recreation experience: camping, hiking, paddling, fishing, etc.
  8. Ability to lead interpretive walks on rough terrain for at least 5 miles.
  9. Personal or professional gardening or agriculture experience.
  10. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional 10-hour plus days, early mornings, and late nights.
  11. Strong organizational skills.
  12. Excellent judgment, decisiveness, and creativity when handling new or unexpected situations.
  13. Ability to multi-task under pressure.
  14. Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation to work.
  15. Ability to safely drive a 14-passenger van and meet for Mountain Air vehicle insurance eligibility requirements.
  16. Confidence when speaking to groups of adults and children of all ages.
  17. Holds a current CPR/First Aid credential or is willing to train and certify for one.
