JOB SUMMARY

The position involves engaging in building inspections to ensure compliance with the adopted county building code.  Work involves ensuring residential and commercial buildings meet the required building code standards; inspecting new home construction, existing home construction, commercial buildings, fire damage, mobile homes, etc.; inspection can include structural, electrical, mechanical, some plumbing, flood assessment, and electrical emergency reconnects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs inspections of structural, electrical, plumbing and mechanical components of new construction, repairs, and/or alterations of buildings and other structures for compliance with county codes and ordinances and provides suggestions or instructions for correcting deficiencies.
  • Meets with Contractors, Homeowners and other interested parties to answer code and procedural questions.
  • Evaluates drawings, plans and blueprints, and checks for types of material, fire protection, proper lighting and ventilation.
  • Reports violators who fail to comply with county ordinances.
  • Maintains appropriate records of all review, approvals, inspections, enforcements, etc. performed.
  • Makes recommendations, suggestions and answers questions regarding code content, interprets codes and ordinances to contractors, professionals and the general public.
  • Assist clerks in office with counter questions, answering phones, setting up inspection times and responding to questions.
  • Serves as a backup for plumbing and septic inspectors.
  • Performs work at assigned location during specified business hours.
  • Performs related additional duties as required and assigned.

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in the building industry;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a certification as a residential or commercial inspector from the International Code Council or be able to obtain certification within an agreed upon time for continued employment.
  • Must possess a valid State Driver's License.

Special Requirements:

  • Many situations may require early morning or late evening hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge and ability to use tools, materials and techniques of the building trade.
  • Skills in effective written and oral communication.
  • Ability to learn the adopted county codes and ordinances, and division practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium and requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. The work also requires mental and visual acuity, speaking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling; picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand; grasping; picking, holding or otherwise working with the whole hand; hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, and walking.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work normally performed in various weather conditions of below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and humid conditions, with direct sunlight exposure and through rough undeveloped terrain conditions at various proposed or ongoing developments. There is a possibility of bodily injury when working on ladders, confined spaces or cramped body positions, working near large moving equipment, in darkness or dim light or being burned. Individuals in this position will be exposed to a wide variety of noxious air, odor, smoke, toxic substances, asbestos, or free silica, and dust. Some work situations may take place near loud annoying noises, near electrical hazards. This position involves interaction with other employees and the general public and work pace is self-determined.  The work is occasionally performed indoors in an office environment with low to moderate noise level and in a motor vehicle.
