Description

SUMMARY

Provides medical care and treatment to obstetrical patients under supervision of Obstetrician, delivers babies, instructs patients in prenatal and postnatal health practices, and performs related work as assigned.

 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in initial examination of obstetrical patient, and is assigned responsibility for care, treatment, and delivery of patient.
  • Examines patient during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results, and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure that patient's progress is normal.
  • Orders and performs laboratory and screening tests in accordance with approved protocols or standardized procedures.
  • Discusses case with Obstetrician to assure observation of specified practices.
  • Instructs patient in diet and prenatal health practices.
  • Diagnoses and follows up on resolution of persistent health problems;
  • Stays with patient during labor to reassure patient and to administer medication.
  • Delivers infant and performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.
  • When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of Obstetrician.
  • Visits patient during postpartum period in hospital and at home to instruct patient in care of self and infant and examine patient.
  • Prepares and maintains a wide variety of records and reports.
  • Accurately records necessary information in medical record, according to established format.
  • Conducts classes for groups of patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and family orientation.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and Quality Assurance activities as required.
  • Identifies problems related to patient services and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Participates in evaluation of peers and support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work as a member of a team in order to communicate and/or solicit pertinent information to and from other team members and support team decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound and responsible judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal.  Ability to establish constructive working relationships with all levels of management and employees in a staff of varied and diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle difficult or confrontational situations in a calm, consistent, and equitable manner.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  
  • Ability to effectively represent ODCHC’s interests in the community and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers, public, private, and professional groups.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Diploma from an accredited medical school leading to licensing as a Nurse Midwife.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current California Certified Nurse Midwife license.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • NONE

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Speaking and hearing sufficient to communicate effectively by phone or in person, at normal volumes.
  • Vision adequate to read correspondence, computer screens, forms, etc.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable means of transportation.

Wage Range $131,227.20 - $151,153.60 + Call and Delivery Stipend
