Position is as needed. 0-19 hours per week.

Position Summary: Under the direct direction of various Public Health staff, the Interpreter provides interpretation and translation services (verbal and written) facilitating the interaction between the Public Health Department and members of the Hispanic community.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

Translator Duties:

  • Perform English to Spanish and Spanish to English translations/interpretations.
  • Meet and greet clients in the performance of interpreter/translation duties.
  • Assist clients with the completion of forms, when needed
  • Copy paperwork and forms as needed.
  • May create and/or translate forms for office use to facilitate services.
  • Maintain client confidentiality at all times.
  • Assist clinic supervisor/community nurse with client health evaluations by; requesting, faxing and locating medical records.
  • Assist clinic supervisor/community nurse with OMC and annual check ups tracking systems.
  • Assist community health nurse in home visit; translates, interprets and relates health information as instructed by RN.
  • Assist community health nurse with new clients; make calls to set up appointment for community health nurse with non-English speaking clients.
  • Other duties as assigned by clinic supervisor, community nurse, office manager, or Public Health Director.

Vaccines/Immunizations:

  • Provide information to clients regarding immunizations needed and recommended spacing of vaccination. If additional clarification is needed, refer to nurses.

Flu Clinics:

  • Assist in translation of public relations materials to promote Flu clinics.
  • May assist nurses and Office manager in organizing and doing clerical work and translations at the various flu clinics held throughout the County.

Public Health Preparedness:

  • May assist through translation in coordination of mass vaccination clinics, including seasonal Influenza clinics and Pertussis vaccination clinics.
  • May provide clerical and communication assistance to Public Health Preparedness Coordinator.
  • May participate in Public Health Preparedness emergency drills
  • May assist in coordination of Public Health Preparedness drills and exercises.
  • May be required in Public Health emergencies to work irregular hours.

Other Duties:

  • May participate in health fairs in the county; promoting services at the MCPH.
  • Performs related duties as assigned to meet business needs.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School education required. Associates degree preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience with translation in a medical or health department office setting preferred.
  • Must have or have the ability to become certified as a formal Health Care Interpreter through a County-approved HCI training program or equivalent, within six months of hire.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Equipment used: Personal computer, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, personal electronic devices and other office equipment, automobile.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word, email, and other software applications as required.
