Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Accountant plays a pivotal role on YWCA of Minneapolis’s business office team. The Accountant is responsible for all aspects of the health and wellness (H&W) accounting functions.  Further responsibilities will include understanding and interpreting the YWCA of Minneapolis mission to members, staff and participants.  Assisting the Controller, CFOO and H&W leadership with various statistical reports and/or projects as needed to support in the forecast and budget process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Membership Contracts & Related Paperwork

  • Review membership contracts and related membership documents and ensure that all data entry into the membership database is accurate.
  • Update activity on member accounts for different programs
  • Review anomaly queries and make corrections to the membership database as needed.

Cash Deposit and Cash Receipt Reconciling

  • Prepare the daily cash deposit and manage petty cash.
  • Perform the daily reconciliation of the cash receipts and follow up with the appropriate staff regarding any errors, questions, or inconsistencies that surface during reconciliation. 
  • Create an accurate journal entry to be posted to the general ledger for cash receipts.

Customer Service

  • Respond to all inquiries from YWCA of Minneapolis H&W members over the phone, in person, or via email in a professional, accurate, and timely manner.  Refer any unresolved issues to the appropriate individual.
  • Provide support to other YWCA staff as needed regarding transactions or other accounting related inquiries. 

Monthly YWCA of Minneapolis Membership Billing

  • Review, report and make corrections to member accounts before processing the monthly billing.
  • Run the process billing and review all reports for accuracy before accepting. 
  • Process the Electronic Funds Transfer and credit card payments for all members.
  • Follow up and resolve declined membership drafts.
  • Manage the non-EFT membership accounts.

Month-end close, Journal entries and reconciliations

  • Enter journal entries for respective H&W activity
  • Complete reconciliations for H&W general ledger accounts
  • Aid in understanding month end close variances related to H&W

Independent Audit Support

  • Prepare and review audit workpapers for respective areas
  • Anticipate audit requests and areas of audit focus
  • Assure all areas of responsibility are audit-ready

Other projects as assigned

  • Including but not limited to supporting the forecast and budget process

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Controller. The incumbent will interact with other business office staff as well as H&W staff.  Critical relationships include Midtown Membership Advisors, Hospitality Staff, General Manager, & Membership Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting preferred but a two year program or experience will be considered
  • Minimum 1 year general accounting experience including financial management and reporting
  • Strong PC skills to include Excel and Word
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Proficient with computerized accounting systems
  • Strong analytical, problem solving & time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse styles, cultures and perspectives
  • Sound organization skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time.

Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

  • Minimum of two-year accounting degree and 2-3 years experience in accounting/bookkeeping.
  • Proficient at 10-key and in Windows spreadsheet and word processing software environments.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Strong mathematical skills that includes but not limited to the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as individually.
  • Customer service oriented and ability to maintain a good professional relationship with vendors, managers and team members.
  • Strong problem-solving ability, including ability to productively resolve conflict.
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.

 

Preferred:

 

  • Experience writing and using queries.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time
