The position:

Reporting to the Manager, Aquatics, this role is responsible for assisting with day to day aquatic program operations including Lifeguarding and Instructing. The person in this position provides supervision to part-time staff and volunteers and ensures quality program delivery and excellent customer service to meet current and changing needs of our service population.

This is a temporary full time (1.0 FTE) position expected to be up to 18 months in length. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the implementation and leadership of aquatic programs and services
  • Ensure operating standards are in accordance with Holland Bloorview Policies and Procedures, Ontario Health Regulations and industry standards
  • Knowledge of various disabilities and associated barriers, and behaviour management techniques
  • Liaise with families and make services accessible to participants who have a disability including performing needs assessments and ensuring participants are integrated appropriately into programs
  • Directly supervise program delivery to ensure high quality and safety, including monitoring of instructor lesson plans, worksheets and report cards to ensure they are completed accurately
  • Provide direction, supervision and leadership to part-time staff and volunteers
  • Exercise discretion and judgment with handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Coordinates the delivery of a swim program for the school students attending the Bloorview School Authority
  • Organization of the Community Aquatic Therapy program, including administrative duties and supporting and working closely with the Physiotherapist
  • Delivery of the Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course
  • Assist with program registration
  • Completion of appropriate records and reports
  • Lifeguarding and program instruction as required
  • Assist with administrative duties
  • Collaborates with other staff in the hospital (Recreation Therapists, Physiotherapists, finance, Volunteer Resources, School Principal and Teachers, Educational Assistants, Building Services, Housekeeping)
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, support the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advance a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices
  • Attend and assist with the organization and running of all Aquatics staff trainings

Qualifications

  • College diploma in Recreation Studies or related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in aquatics including directing the work of others
  • Extensive experience working with children with disabilities in an aquatic setting
  • Strong organizational, communication, report-writing, problem-solving, and grammar skills
  • Superior customer service skills including working collaboratively with staff teams
  • Computer literacy using Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word) and desktop publishing software
  • Must be prepared to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Required current qualifications: Standard First Aid and CPR, Swim Instructor – Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Certification, Aquatic Supervisor Certification
  • Additional awards such as Canadian Red Cross Youth Leader, National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner (or willing to obtain), High Five ®, Certified Aquafitness Instructor, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset
  • Experience with registration software ActiveNet is considered an asset
