JOB SUMMARY Performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance and construction work for roadways, storm drainage and other public works facilities and systems. Specific tasks and duties have been identified as essential for the successful performance at this position. It is acknowledged at this time that the following list is not all-inclusive and may be supplemented as needed. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Operate a brush mower Maintain a variety of records relating to materials hauled, work performed, job location, hours worked, etc. Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement patching, ditch digging, shoveling, jack hammering, chain sawing, and other physical labor necessary. Ensure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use. Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment. Operate light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as air compressor, brush chipper, brush hog, chain saw, and jackhammer. Perform all duties in accordance with safety policies and procedures. Place traffic control devices and perform duties as flagger for work zone traffic control in compliance with the County’s standards and guidelines. Perform some work as part of the County’s Emergency Operations Plan.   Position Highway Seasonal Laborer   Position Requirements Qualifications Education, Experience, and Licenses An individual applying for this position should have a combination of education and practical work experience. The minimum qualifications are: Graduation from a high school or GED. Must be 18 or older Must possess a valid driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Specific tasks require specific knowledge, skills and abilities. To successfully perform the following will be required: Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities. Skill in the operation of some of the listed tools and equipment. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time. Ability to work safely. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to work whenever necessary. Work schedule is many times determined by weather conditions. Workdays can be long and strenuous without scheduled days off for extended periods. Starting times are varied and cannot be set by employee. Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or smell. Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects and equipment.
