JOB SUMMARY

**** Pay range: $17.50 hourly ****

The Lead Youth Counselor position provides direct service to participants with a focus on inspiring youth to make positive decisions for themselves and their futures. Contact Plus is a sexual health education program that provides young people the tools needed to engage in healthy relationships and be leaders in their community. Much of the curriculum is focused on building the skills needed to engage in healthy relationships, such as: consent in all relationships, naming personal values and respecting the values of others, personal identity/agency - knowing who you are and what you want.? 

 

This full-time position will provide direct service during summer programing; and lead sexuality education programming for youth in grades 6-8 during the school year. This person will support curriculum development, partnership engagement, and will provide direct service to students.  

 

Hours

40 hrs/wk Monday – Friday; ability to work remotely 1-2 days per week outside of required programming. 

Shifts and sites vary based on program need 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Implement Comprehensive Programming

Recruit and maintain program participants by providing program presentations to schools and youth serving agencies 

Plan, prepare and facilitate/co-facilitate age appropriate and culturally sensitive educational activities utilizing sexual health education curriculum and other Girls & Youth curriculum 

Able to facilitate a large group of participants, delegate and direct other Youth Workers and Counselors, and make sound decisions in the absence of the Program Coordinator or Director 

Create and maintain a safe learning environment that is student-centered, mission-focused, and accessible to a diverse student body 

Support communication with participants and families, and organize and support retention efforts to maintain participants 

Effectively communicate and collaborate with key school partners to ensure positive program outcomes that meet the needs of all involved 

Administration 

Collect registration forms, participant demographic information, and track program attendance 

Deliver and obtain program evaluation information from participants for program quality assurance and reporting purposes 

Maintain the online data management system with a commitment to accuracy and regularity 

Assist Program Coordinator with continued development of policies, short and long-range goals, strategic planning, and budget expenditures 

 

Seek Continuous Professional Development

Participate in learning experiences that enhance programming efforts 

Develop and/or enrich activity opportunities that engage youth participants interests and requests 

Participate in meetings with Contact+ team, as well as school staff, as applicable 

Collaborate with Girls & Youth Program Managers, Program Coordinators, and Youth Counselors across Girls & Youth programs; develop youth work skills in different programming contexts  

 

RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Contact Plus Coordinator who reports to the Girls and Youth Program Director.  The incumbent will interact with Girls and Youth staff, Minneapolis Public Schools contacts and community organization contacts. Critical relationships will include program participants and families.    

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: 

  • Minimum two years' experience working with youth from low-income and inner-city families  
  • Two years or more experience planning and facilitating effective, structured groups 
  • Strong oral, written and presentation skills 
  • Ability to facilitate and teach comprehensive groups focused on sexual health education 
  • Ability to carry out duties independently, as well as in a team setting 
  • Ability to work with a variety of cultures, backgrounds and perspectives 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make quick decisions while using good judgment 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) 
  • Possess current CPR and First Aid certification, or successfully obtain within 90 days of hire 
  • Strong belief in YWCA and ability to convey its importance 

Preferred: 

  • Minimum of two years college or equivalent, or BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field 
  • Experience in youth programming related to sexual health education and adolescent development 

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds 
  • Must be able to travel to various YWCA Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, and community sites
