Telecommunications Technician I 

Description

Job Purpose

Install telecommunications owner provided equipment (set top boxes, ONT’s routers, etc.) and perform associated tasks such as drop installation, both overhead and underground. Troubleshooting within the customer’s premises, installation and/or replacement of cabling and equipment within the customer’s premises, and limited troubleshooting of field equipment.

Must successfully complete each step of the outlined apprentice training program in order to advance through each level of the apprenticeship to attain Journeyman status. This includes completion of NCTI courses for Tech I or relevant courses and on-the-job training.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Perform customer installations of all Owner provided communication services, upgrades, and downgrades of service, and limited field troubleshooting. Including:
    1. Install and set up communications equipment, including but not limited to set-top boxes, optical network terminals (ONTs), routers, PCs, or other computing devices for Internet access, phone service, and customer-owned equipment (DVD players, etc.) or other services that may be provided.
    2. Routing of communication lines, such as CAT6 cabling, fiber optics, twisted pair, coax, etc. Lines may be routed on the exterior, interior or within walls.
    3. Installation of outlets for termination points of cabling
    4. Terminate and test installed cabling.
    5. Installation and configuration of routers to support maximum coverage areas and performanc
    6. Troubleshoot customer services generally from the fiber demarcation point to the customer’s equipment.
    7. Perform basic troubleshooting for service-impacting issues using diagnostic equipment for the drop, from the premise to the splice case.
    8. Ensure all customers are well educated on the product(s) installed and documentation is updated and completed.
    9. Collect communications equipment as required.
  2. Perform construction activities such as placement of underground and aerial fiber drops, maintaining approved construction standards for depth of bury or minimum clearance for aerial lines. and splicing the fiber drop at the NiD (Network Interface Device)
  3. Ensure vehicles are organized and well-stocked with tools, materials, and inventory.

 

Other Responsibilities

  1. Maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility’s safety programs, complete training appropriate for the position, and provide safe working conditions and practices.
  2. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.
  3. Perform basic fiber splicing.
  4. Assist Telecommunications Tech II and III with troubleshooting and construction projects
  5. Ensure owner provided vehicle is well maintained and properly stocked with required material and equipment to perform job responsibilities.
  6. Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications

Knowledge

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Minimum 1 year of communication system course work or equivalent work experience.
  3. Minimum 1 year of customer service experience.
  4. Working knowledge of computer software and hardware, mobile devices, and other networked devices.

Skills

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all audiences, including customers.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  3. Proficiency with use of PCs and relevant business software, including the Microsoft Office suite of products and electronic mapping software.
  4. Good problem identification, analysis, and solving skills.
  5. Good work planning skills.

Abilities

  1. Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team.
  2. Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner.
  3. Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed to meet department/organizational objectives.
  4. Must have mechanical aptitude and be comfortable working with power equipment and tools of all sizes.
  5. Ability to read, and interpret drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical manuals.
  6. Ability to distinguish colors.

Other Position Requirements

  1. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Chauffeur’s designation must be acquired within 90 days of hire.
  2. Must comply with the Utility’s Residency Policy.
  3. Must be able to attend work on a regular basis, work overtime as needed, and participate in a rotating stand-by schedule.
  4. Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.

Work Environment

  1. Work environment is primarily in customer locations or at outdoor job sites throughout the community. Part of each day is spent in an office environment. Fieldwork is performed in all weather conditions.
  2. Must be able to climb ladders and work from elevated platform or bucket trucks for extended periods under various types of weather/seasonal conditions.
  3. Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.

This position is rated Heavy in the WorkSTEPS program.
