Community Service Officer (CSO) - Seasonal, Part-Time 

Description

Please note that this position is designed to be a seasonal part-time position (12 weeks, mid-May through mid-August) for students enrolled with a criminal justice focused program prior to graduating from the students’ educational institution. This position is not intended to lead to employment in a sworn position, however may certainly assist with the training and on the job experience gained.

OBJECTIVE

To provide a variety of community service and other municipal services including, but not limited to: follow up on nuisance complaints, animal control, control of recovered/found property, enforcement of various ordinances, and other community service oriented tasks that ensure effective and prompt delivery of services.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED

  • Works under the general supervision of the Police Captain and/or designee
  • No supervision exercised

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers

  • Interacts with others in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication
  • Helps to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champions diversity and inclusion
  • Participates in citywide training designed to strengthen competencies in areas such as communications, leadership, decision-making and problem solving

Performs follow up on nuisance complaints concerning the general safety and health of the community

  • Takes nuisance type complaints in person or by telephone
  • Advises subjects of complaints on ordinance violations and necessary corrective action
  • Follows up to ensure corrective action is taken
  • Develops a good working knowledge of the types of cases that need to be referred to other city departments or agencies, and ensures accurate information is provided
  • Communicates with city attorney regarding appropriate legal remedies

Handles animal-related complaints within the city, including both domestic and wild animals

  • Impounds loose, abandoned, vicious or rabid animals
  • Disposes of dead carcasses
  • Issues citations to violators of the animal ordinance
  • Responds to and handles complaints of animal bites, prepares appropriate reports, ensures proper quarantine procedures, impounds animals when necessary, and ensures proper follow-up inspections are completed
  • Responds to and handles all animal complaints, including barking dogs and other public nuisances associated with animals
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the various wildlife issues within the city, including handling nuisance or sick/injured animals, working with wildlife rehab programs, and working with other agencies as required

Conducts fire and safety inspections of the Alexandria Police Department facility as required

  • Inspects facility for sanitation and maintenance issues
  • Conducts a thorough safety inspection to ensure locks are in working order and no weapons or contraband are present
  • Tests and ensures the emergency alarm system is in working order

Maintains the control and inventory of recovered property

  • Documents and inventories the found and seized property turned over to his/her custody according to department policy.
  • Searches stolen property file and computer files to match recovered property with victims if possible.
  • Assists in disposal of recovered property according to law and department procedures when necessary.

Performs other miscellaneous tasks

  • Delivers city documents to the City Council, Planning Commission, courts or others as requested or assigned
  • Makes other department-related pickups or deliveries as requested
  • Assists persons who are locked out of home or vehicle according to department procedure.
  • Enforces parking regulations
  • Assists with other assignments as requested, including, but not limited to, traffic direction, traffic details, and medical responses (if qualified)
  • Performs other work as apparent or assigned
  • May assist the community relations officer with various neighborhood initiatives

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Should have some experience with various office equipment
  • Must have ability to discreetly handle confidential matters
  • Must have the physical ability to drive for extended periods, handle animals (including large and small, domestic and wild), and move large and/or bulky objects
  • Must be able to tolerate stress in a multitude of forms, such as taking enforcement action, dealing with anxious and emotional persons, and working rotating shifts

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess valid Class D Driver’s License with a good driving record
  • Must have experience with computer programs and data entry
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college or university related to criminal justice or law enforcement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a customer or community service paid or volunteer position
