LOCATION: Thomas Jefferson Elementary School
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Daily direction, support and oversight is provided by the principal of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. Direct supervision and ongoing professional development is provided by the lead partner, Moravian University. This position works under the direction of the Director of Civic Engagement within the division of Student Life. Orientation and ongoing trainings regarding the community school model is provided by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Part-time Activities Coordinator, volunteers and/or interns as necessary
POSITION SUMMARY: The Community School Coordinator works at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in conjunction with the school principal to coordinate activities, programs, and supplemental services. The Coordinator designs these supports by gathering feedback from key stakeholders and analyzing school performance metrics. All provided resources are intended to support basic needs for the Thomas Jefferson community, fostering social-emotional, physical, and academic growth. This is a 12-month full-time position; Monday-Friday 8:15am-4:15pm with the expectation of attendance at occasional evening/weekend events and overseeing the coverage of after-school programs as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Relationship Building
- Develops, maintains and promotes relationships with the school staff and administration, students, parents/guardians, community partners, the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, and appropriate stakeholders within the partners at Moravian University and Air Products.
- Data Driven Interventions
- Oversees and implements data driven interventions related to the key priority areas; ensures coordination of the programs/services outlined below at the school site by communicating/collaborating directly with the designated supervisor of such programs/services:
- Physical health
- Dental
- Mental health
- Extended-day enrichment opportunities
- Extended-day recreational opportunities
- Family-involvement strategies/events/programming
- Community-involvement strategies/events/programming
- Specialty services
- Special projects
- Others as identified and necessary
- Manages processes for collecting programmatic data (for attendance, academics, basic needs, after school programming, etc,).
- Develops, manages and executes data driven strategies to address needs.
- Completes quarterly and yearly community school reports on community school outcomes for the United Way and various stakeholders.
- Participates in the discussion and planning of the Comprehensive School Wide Accountability Plan for Thomas Jefferson; uses data from these planning sessions to drive development of additional partnerships at the school site.
- Leads systematic evaluation of program, activity and event effectiveness.
- Utilizes positive youth development resources to improve student attendance, behavior and academic performance.
- Collects, reviews and analyzes student data to develop new strategies and plan for continuous improvement of existing interventions
- Project Management
- Provides project support and management to all individuals supporting the community school effort.
- Delegates and monitors effectiveness of tasks
- Coordinator of Resources
- Coordinates with appropriate agencies and with key departments at Moravian University, including working with The Center for Career and Civic Engagement, The Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, academic departments, Athletics and others to identify and create volunteer opportunities at Thomas Jefferson that are mutually beneficial. Also works with representatives from Air Products to collaborate on designated projects.
- Recruits, trains and coordinates all volunteers and mentors at school site.
- Solicits, coordinates and distributes basic needs
- Identifies and builds relationships with key service providers needed to best support students and families.
- Manages all budgets associated with community school support at the school level
- Identifies and obtains additional program and grant opportunities for Thomas Jefferson
- Responsible for understanding the policies and procedures of the school site for referring families to appropriate school staff or community based social service agencies in order to have needs met.
- Leadership and Communication
- Actively participates in/facilitates core team meetings sharing relevant data, highlighting concerns and developing solutions.
- Leads, develops and facilitates an effective community leadership team if deemed necessary by the core team.
- Strategic Engagement
- Participates in meetings that are critical to successful engagement and integration: Faculty meetings, grade level meetings, PTO meetings, SAP meetings (after certification), parent/teacher conferences, Leadership Team, Northside Network, weekly meetings with school principal, etc.
- Orientation and monthly community school meetings with the United Way.
- Bethlehem Area School District in-services and training.
- Individual meetings with ongoing partners
- Identifies and cultivates new community partnerships as needs arise
- Attendance Improvement Initiatives
- Runs attendance data reports regularly.
- Works with the school counselor, principal and attendance ambassador to improve attendance.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: A four-year accredited college degree in a field related to the guidance, education and development of young people; master's degree preferred. A minimum of three to five years related experience working with youth is required. Must be flexible, organized, able to multitask and able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions. Experience in bilingual-bicultural settings is preferred with a demonstrated ability to relate to multicultural populations in ways that value diversity. Must be able to communicate effectively with youth, parents/guardians, staff and the community at large in both oral and written form. Knowledge of the public education system in Pennsylvania as well as the operation of community-based organizations and institutions of higher education is an asset. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and all functions of Google Workspace/Suite.
REQUIREMENTS: Qualified medical examination as per Pennsylvania law. Valid criminal history and child abuse clearances. Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history background check.
