JOB SUMMARY:

  • The clinical pharmacy manager is responsible for coordinating clinical pharmacy services and ensuring that the pharmacy provides optimal clinical services on a daily basis.
  • The clinical pharmacy manager facilitates the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems that promote desirable patient outcomes through the use of safe, appropriate, cost-effective medication therapies.
  • Minimum of 37.5 hours per week, but additional hours may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directs development, implementation, and maintenance of clinical pharmacy services.
  • Develops and maintains a medical staff-approved formulary.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of treatment guidelines, protocols, formulary changes, and critical pathways as approved by appropriate committees.
  • Coordinates the selection and safe use of alternative medications in response to medication shortages.
  • Facilitates the identification, resolution, implementation, and communication of cost-effective medication-use issues in collaboration with the medical staff.
  • Supports the pharmacy’s pharmacoeconomic efforts; reviews the use of targeted medications for compliance with current pharmacoeconomic programs.
  • Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners; recommends evidence-based medication therapy regimens and monitoring plans; suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed.
  • Monitors medication therapy regimens for allergies, contraindications, drug–drug interactions, drug–food interactions, drug–laboratory test interactions, adverse drug reactions, appropriateness of drug and dose, and therapeutic duplications.
  • Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the professional staff.
  • Provides training and education to pharmacists regarding pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomics.
  • Manages and instructs pharmacists and pharmacy students.
  • Prepares and presents drug reviews, MUE criteria, antibiotic sensitivity reports, adverse drug reaction reports, and pharmacy interventions summary to the P&T committee.
  • Collects and analyzes microbiology data and reviews antibiogram annually.
  • Reviews and evaluates the medical literature for studies supporting the pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomic programs.
  • Participates in community educational programs (e.g., diabetes classes, health fairs).
  • Reviews the performance and documentation of clinical activities of all pharmacists including documentation of the financial impact of clinical activities.
  • Coordinates policies and procedures for clinical activities (e.g., therapeutic interchange).
  • Prepares reports on pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomic activities including financial impact, as directed.
  • Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department; collects and analyzes data and maintains documentation of all clinical activities.
  • Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with staff members and within the community. Clinical Pharmacy Manager also actively design and lead stewardship programs as well as initiatives to detect, mitigate, and prevent medication adverse events.

  • Maintains a neat, professional, well-groomed appearance; wears identification badge at all times.
  • Performs work within specified time frames; adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
  • Provides courteous, cooperative service to patients, visitors, and staff members; demonstrates good oral and written communication.
  • Works cooperatively with all staff members; voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrates sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, visitor, and employee information; complies with HIPAA Privacy Rule standards.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Adheres to health-system and departmental policies and procedures; complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, medication-use safety, security, fire safety, and infection control; complies with all applicable federal/state/ local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Performance demonstrates efforts to improve patient satisfaction, lower costs, improve quality, and promote safety.
  • Understands and meets customers’ needs and expectations; the patient and family members always come first.
  • Demonstrates the ability to address problems in a group setting using tools and techniques for identification and resolution of problems.
  • Demonstrates the values and behaviors of the organization.
 
Position Requirements

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Currently licensed to practice pharmacy in the state of Indiana.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher (PharmD preferred).
  • 8–10 years health-system experience preferred, with 3–5 years in a clinical pharmacist position required.
