Seeking a motivated and experienced Safety Manager who will oversee the Desert Museum's Safety Program and Security Department!

Job Title: Safety Manager

Reports To: Associate Director of Operations
FLSA Status: Exempt
Reviewed: March 2024
Compensation: $60,000 per year plus a comprehensive benefit package, which includes medical, dental, vision, life and LTD insurance, FSA, HRA, 403(b) retirement plan, paid holidays, personal business days, sick leave, and vacation.

Summary
The Safety Manager plays an integral role in creating a safe, high-quality guest experience and contributing to the Desert Museum's mission. The person in this role maintains high safety standards and helps to promote a healthy safety culture. The position manages the Museum's Safety Program and Security team. The position accommodates ever-changing business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Oversees the Museum’s Safety program and Security department.
  • Works with department managers to formulate department-specific emergency preparedness and safety-related operational procedures.
  • Establishes operational procedures and secures the grounds and facilities by directing the activities of the Security department staff, designing routes, monitoring timetables, scheduling and assigning coverage, and inspecting work results. Fosters a guest-friendly approach to security.
  • Plans and implements programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices, emergency preparedness, fire prevention, and correct handling techniques for chemicals, toxins, equipment, and other materials.
  • Confers with representatives of local emergency response and law enforcement agencies to ensure cooperation and coordination of services.
  • Works with senior management to coordinate safety-related drills and ensure compliance with the AZA and other regulatory agency standards.
  • Ensures safety policies and procedures comply with local, state, and federal rules and regulations, including OSHA.
  • Inspects facilities to ensure quality standards are met, as well as to identify existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Works with management to continually evaluate and update established emergency preparedness plans.
  • Co-chairs the Desert Museum’s Safety Committee.
  • Ensures monthly inspections and service of fire equipment, first aid boxes, eye wash stations, and on-site elevators are conducted.
  • Works with vendors for fire suppression, alarm, and security systems and oversees related maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintains department records, including equipment certifications and safety/security reports, and prepares and approves detailed reports concerning matters investigated.
  • Regularly fulfills on-duty supervisory coverage needs.
  • Analyzes needs and estimates costs to prepare and administer annual department budgets.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises multiple employees and volunteers with a variety of job functions. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Position Requirements

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience
Associate's degree (A.A.) from a two-year college or trade school and three to four years public safety with a minimum of two years’ experience at the supervisory level; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge of OSHA standards required.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet, spreadsheet, and word processing software and the capacity to learn new programs and technologies.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Arizona Driver's License, First Aid and CPR.

  • Strong conflict management and de-escalation skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to provide outstanding guest service.
  • Ability to act independently and decisively in crises.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally in training environments that includes discharging firearms. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
