JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction and supervision of the Parks Maintenance Manager and/or the area Crew Leader, this position performs the day to day maintenance and construction tasks to maintain and improve the appearance and quality of the parks, athletic fields and facilities.

Position Groundsworker for Parks - Permanent Part Time  
Position Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAINING

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have at least two years of experience in park maintenance or a wide variety of manual labor activities
  • Valid driver's license is required with the ability to drive a truck and trailer, preferred
  • Ability to carry 50 pounds for 25 yards

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • A reasonable mechanical aptitude and interest in machinery and equipment used to maintain parks.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Essential Functions:
  • Perform general outdoor building maintenance.
  • Build, repair, and paint picnic tables and benches.
  • Install, repair and paint fences, backstops and play equipment.
  • Drag, line, and prepare athletic fields and courts.
  • Remove all garbage, paper, leaves, and refuse material from parks.
  • Conduct vehicle and equipment inspections.
  • Perform all turf care including mowing, edging, trimming, fertilizing, irrigating and rolling.
  • Assist other departments with moving items and materials from one building to another.
  • Remove snow from walks, drives, lots and trails.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Complete and submit daily and weekly reports as directed.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions as required.
  • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
  • Abide by the Bolingbrook Park District dress code for your area
  • Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the park district’s safety program
  • Work as a team player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departments
  • Marginal Functions:
  • Plant seeds and bulbs, trees, shrubbery and flowers.
  • Cultivate, water and fertilize shrubs, flower and tree beds.
  • Prune and trim trees and shrubs for improved growth and appearance.
  • Assist with prescribed burns.
  • Build and maintain outdoor ice rinks.
  • Application of pesticides to control insects and weeds.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Walking:  while mowing, pruning and trimming; while inspecting parks               

Climbing:  to climb ladder to prune trees

Talking/Hearing:  to communicate with staff and public

Sitting:  to drive a vehicle and/or riding mower

Reaching:  to retrieve tools, to repair roofs, plumbing and electrical

Pulling:  while pruning and trimming; to prepare athletic fields, to water plant materials

Pushing:  while mowing, trimming and pruning; to plant trees and shrubs, to remove snow

Stooping:  to pick up planting materials, to remove garbage

Crouching:  to pick up planting materials, to remove garbage

Lifting:  to pick up planting materials, to remove garbage, to put away supplies, to carry 50 pounds for 25 yards

Seeing:  to obtain information from written material, to drive a vehicle

May be exposed to all types of weather conditions

May be exposed to poison ivy and biting or stinging insects

COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS

Must have the ability to read and write in English and organize materials.  Ability to drive a vehicle, construction equipment and operate snow removal equipment.  Must be able to relate to other people in a professional manner.  Must dress for all outdoor weather exposures; such as extreme heat and cold. 

FLSA

This is a part-time, hourly non-exempt position    

IMRF
This position qualifies for participation in the IMRF-Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund

HOURS

Permanent Part Time Groundsworkers for Parks, work 28 hours per week , with the following schedules assigned by their supervisor:  1).  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 6:30am to 3pm and Thursday from  6:30am to 10:30am.   2). Tuesday from 6:30am to 10:30 am and Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 6:30 am to 3pm.  Workdays and hours may vary due to workload, weather and holiday.  Will be required to work all special events and some weekends as needed.

NOTEDaily work hours can change with little or no notice to accommodate the necessary workload the park district requires.
