OVERVIEW: The Head Start Part Time Cook is responsible for the planning menu and implementation of nutritional meals for the Head Start program. Promote healthy eating habits for children and staff. Work with Head Start and Early Head Start staff on implementing nutritious curriculum into the classroom. The Head Start Part Time Cook assists in monitoring the food program according to the USDA requirements.

WORK LOCATION: Children's House of Learning

SUPERVISED BY: Safety and Health Manager

POSITION STATUS: Part-time 21.5 hour per week for 49 weeks

SALARY LEVEL: $17.00-$18.56 DOE

WORK SCHEDULE: To be determine by Supervisor 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Preparation of breakfast, am snack, lunch and pm snack daily using USDA nutrition requirements.
  • Plan work schedule so that food production flows smoothly. Work schedule may need to be flexible based on the needs of the program.
  • Adapt the menus according to specific dietary needs/allergies of individual children.
  • When needed may need to purchase food from local grocery store. Cost control is important.
  • Receive and put away food promptly to assure quality control.
  • Must provide cold meals for field trips during summer and several times throughout the year.
  • Must adhere to individual eating patterns and needs of infants and toddlers rather than an adult prescribed time schedule.
  • Assist in serving USDA approved meals and snacks to children. Knowledge of proper serving sizes for infants, toddlers, preschool and school-age children.
  • Be familiar with special dietary needs (allergies) and medical issues (asthma, etc..) of children.
  • Maintains standards of sanitation in the kitchen and dining area by daily cleaning and disinfecting. Cupboards, counter tops, tables, sinks and floors should remain free of food and other items at the end of the day and in accordance with the State Minimum Licensing Requirements.
  • Maintain proper storage and control of waste; keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, proper heating and cooling of foods to prevent bacteria growth and food-borne illnesses.
  • Regular scheduled cleaning of pantry area, dry storage, cupboards, refrigerators, cleaning and defrost freezers.
  • Proper rotation of all food to keep foods fresh and prevent spoilage.
  • Keep classroom carts clean and stocked with proper paper supplies, utensils, and age appropriate dining ware, including sippy cups or bottles as needed.
  • Help plan and participate in food related learning activities in the classroom, planned to effect the selection and enjoyment of a wide variety of nutritious food, which broaden the child's food experience. Work with education staff.
  • Maintain clean laundry. This involves washing, sanitizing and folding daily and properly putting away all laundry (sheets, wash cloths, bibs, etc…).
  • Dishwashing for the program will be required daily.
  • This position will be working to support the 2 Lead Cooks in the kitchen and must coordinate and work together as a team with the kitchen staff and program staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required and one year professional cooking experience.
  • Must be able to prepare quality meals for large groups, follow recipes, and meet nutritional needs for family style and pre-portion style serving.
  • Baking of items is required.
  • Must be able to keep accurate records on menu, budget and inventory.
  • Must be free to travel, available and willing to participate in staff training, meetings and workshops.
  • Personal cleanliness/neatness, good hygiene and grooming.
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, and maintain program wide goals and priorities.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others, and to relate well with children, staff and parents as well as visitors to the center.
  • Experience with low income and culturally diverse families.
  • Demonstrated cooking skills
  • Must be familiar with USDA meal patterns/portions.
  • Attend annual USDA training.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. This position requires interaction with children, staff, parents and community members.
  • Apply basic math skills to recipes.
  • Must be literate.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/CPR (adult, child, infant) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have a Food Handler’s Permit.
  • Must have HIV/AIDS Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • Communication skills: both verbal and written is necessary. This position requires interaction with children, staff, parents and community members.
  • Washington State Patrol Background check to be conducted prior to employment date.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required by position:

  • Ability to prepare quality meals for large groups and meet nutritional needs
  • Ability to keep accurate records on menu, budget and inventory.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education or development
  • Ability to be sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults.
  • Working knowledge of local community resources.
  • Ability to translate theory and professional training into practical solutions.
  • Ability to comply with strict CONFIDENTIALITY.
  • Ability to comply with TRIBAL policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Often physically demanding, including lifting, occasionally up to 50 lbs;
  • Must be able to work in a wide range of positions up to 8 hours per day, including but not limited to kneeling, stretching, squatting, sitting in very little chairs, sitting and getting up off floor, bending, stooping, standing, walking, running, jumping, chasing, crawling, rocking, holding child sitting and standing and generally being able to maintain eye contact with children being served.
  • Able to sustain prolonged standing and sitting.
  • Ability to reach over head;
  • Able to focus and be alert to task

OTHER DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintains good attendance.
  • Maintain monthly food inventory for items needed.
  • Performs all duties assigned in a timely and professional manner.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Must be Tobacco Free on Head Start premises.
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free workplace.
  • Must be sensitive to staff, children and familiar with allergies in a perfume free environment.
  • Pre-Employment UA drug testing to be administer prior to employment
  • Must be a team player
  • Must be able to follow directions and guidelines.
  • Maintaining licensing with a culturally appropriate center, including adequate trained staff, and appropriate coverage for the ages and needs of individual children being served.
