Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

To support the overall communication functions and campaign work of the United Church of Christ’s Public Policy and Advocacy Office in Washington, DC. The primary responsibilities are to provide strategic and technical support for communications as well as issue-based campaigns. Ensure management and growth of the UCC Justice and Peace electronic network (JPANet) through weekly messaging, and manage social media accounts and web pages of the D.C. offices for the purposes of policy advocacy. Provide technical and strategic communication on policy issues to further the mission, goals, and purpose of the United Church of Christ.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Work cross-departmentally within the UCC national setting and with ecumenical and interfaith partners to develop a cohesive online communications strategy for the purposes of public policy advocacy.
  • Serve as critical link to the Office of Marketing and Communications as well as the UCC News team.
  • Work collaboratively with UCC Communications staff to ensure brand consistency and optimal reach.
  • Manage and maintain up-to-date web content and calendar, working with appropriate issue staff to ensure accurate and appropriate electronic content.
  • Manage the social media accounts of the DC office to cultivate a public voice and constituency around issues of public policy.
  • Oversee the Justice and Peace Action Network and technical functions including:
    • Chair meetings of the Justice and Peace Network editorial board.
    • Edit content for electronic media and contribute to messaging strategy
    • Oversee JPANet action alerts, monthly newsletters, and social media accounts for the DC office.
    • Track the impact of action alerts and other communications. Promote the Justice and Peace Action Network, recruit new members, and implement procedures to grow the network through advertising/marketing strategies.
  • Support various communications and advocacy campaigns, such as the Our Faith Our Vote campaign, Ecumenical Advocacy Days, etc.
  • Support building connections between constituents and policy staff around legislative issues.
  • Utilize and experiment with new technologies to raise the profile of the UCC and to attract a more diverse audience.
  • Photograph and record public witnesses and major events as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • College degree in communications or 3-5 years of experience, or a combination of academic study and experience.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including the ability to conceptualize and develop resources and edit electronic content and visuals for effective messaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.
  • Experience managing social media accounts and content management systems.
  • Experience with basic website development, photography and/or videography.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings.
  • Knowledge of the UCC and its public witness, polity and structure is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with public policy advocacy is highly preferred.
  • Occasional travel required.

 

This position requires work in the Washington, DC Office at least 3 days/week.
