Richmond Behavioral Health has an exciting new opporunity for a receovery focused Peer Recovery Specialist to join our Medication Assisted Opioid Treatment Program. The individual selected will performintermediate skilled human support work ensuring individuals are prepared for treatment and post-treatment by providing intensive technical training, maintaining project files and data, conducting personal interactions with individuals to promote peer-to-peer support, working with Case Managers, other team members and individuals to ensure healthy progression, providing suggestions to individuals to advise of quality, sound decisions, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Program Manager or Program Supervisor.

Essential Functions

Provides recovery support, coaching and outreach services to current and potential individuals in the field; provides peer coach orientations.

Represents and promotes Authority services and programs to community partners; serves as liaison between individuals, service providers and Authority staff.

Provides motivational prompting and informational support to individuals; encourages and provides positive reinforcement and support to individuals.

Assists individuals with the development of professional resumes and employment applications.

Conducts individual sessions with each individual regarding progress, recovery and post treatment.

May train individuals on use of electronic devices including computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets; trains individuals on basic and intermediate computer software.

Schedules and performs quarterly follow-ups with individual; provides added incentives to individual.

Directs individuals to available community resources related to recovery, social services and employment opportunities; maintains current knowledge of available resources; identifies community areas that may benefit from outreach efforts.

May prepare and submit project status reports; prepare project agendas for activities and meetings; enter assessment data; maintain individual insurance information; maintain individual files, in accordance with special grant requirements, utilizing electronic health records.

Performs intake duties for individuals; monitors and maintains satisfactory intake and follow up percentages.

Visits individuals in treatment centers, recovery centers, home and other community locations to document progress.

Transports individuals to and from appointments; provides child minding services for individuals as needed so that they can participate in treatment services

May monitor facility and grounds and individual whereabouts in residential treatment environments as assigned.

Orders and maintains inventory of project supplies.

Researches and posts all information related to individual progression; relays information to Case Managers and Clinicians relating to individuals progression or digression.

Facilitates HIV educational groups throughout the Authority.

Provides HIV counseling, testing and referral services to individual and the community, which may require adjustment to and flexibility in work scheduling.

Trained in opioid overdose reversal and able to utilize naloxone to reverse opioid overdose.

Attends staff meetings as required; assists with Authority functions by setting up rooms as needed

 
Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge assessment and other measurement tools; general knowledge of community and Authority resources and programs of regional and State sources for the community service population; general knowledge of substance use disorders and behavioral health, with a particular emphasis on opioid use disorders and the use of medication assisted treatment, particularly methadone; general knowledge of motivational interviewing and supportive counseling techniques; general knowledge of social casework techniques; general knowledge of human development and behavior; general knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of individual, family and group support interventions; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with medical personnel, law enforcement, individuals, supervisors, community partners, associates and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in recovery-oriented systems in a behavioral health setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Eligibility to register as Certified Peer Recovery Specialist required.

Training and certification in medication-assisted recovery preferred.

HIV pre and post-test counseling certification preferred

Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
