JOB SUMMARY

**** Pay range: $48,000 - $52,000 Annually ****

This full-time position designs, implements, and supervises daily operations for the “Beacon Learning Center” at Hmong International Academy (HIA), an elementary school with students in Kindergarten-Grade 5 (a Minneapolis Public School).

Beacons program offers after-school academic and enrichment opportunities, is open to all students at the school, and is free-of-charge for all participants.

A dynamic leadership position, the Program Coordinator leads a team of Youth Counselors to deliver quality youth programming while prioritizing and developing relationships with youth, and creating a safe, respectful, and highly engaging environment for high school youth.

The Program Coordinator for Beacons at HIA is an integral leader within the Beacons Network, and also collaborates closely with school staff along with community-based organizations.

This position, as member of the Girls and Youth Leadership Team, collaborates with Program Coordinators and Program Managers in service to achieving program-specific and departmental outcomes.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervision and Development of Staff:

  • Recruit, hire, coach, and supervise Youth Counselor staff, consistent with mission, policies, and practices of YWCA Minneapolis Girls & Youth department and the Beacons Network.
  • Ensure staff have the proper training and professional development, information resources, and tools required to provide quality programming.
  • Model Youth Development best practices in all aspects of program design and implementation.
  • Assist staff in developing annual individual and program work plans and goals.
  • Support program Youth Counselors in collaborating throughout Girls & Youth programs, including developing youth work skills in different contexts.

Program Implementation and Coordination:

  • Identify and implement Beacons Learning Center at HIA, to align with YWCA Minneapolis mission and Girls & Youth outcomes, along with Beacons Network policies and practices.
  • Develop, lead, and oversee program design, structures, schedules, staffing, and activities – to reflect best practices in Youth Development to create and sustain an after-school environment for high school youth that is safe, respectful, and highly engaging.
  • Participate regularly and consistently with Beacons Network staff and events, for program development, continuous program improvement, and to represent the HIA Beacons site among Beacons Network sites and leadership.
  • Facilitate youth and family engagement in all program offerings – especially through communication and relationships with the youth and their families.
  • Implement and maintain safety standards and protocols for physical and emotional safety.
  • Support departmental goals by participating in year-round after-school programming (school year, summer), as well as special events and community outreach efforts.

Community Collaboration and Partnership:

  • Identify, develop, and sustain partnerships and collaborations with community-based organizations, in order to provide programming that directly responds to youth needs and preferences.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of program-related events.
  • Represent and actively participate in key community committees and meetings related to program focus, goals, and youth development.
  • Develop and maintain interagency networks and linkages in support of programming.

 

Administration:

  • Develop and monitor yearly program budget. Ensure accuracy and timely completion of all budget and expenditure documentation and reporting.
  • Oversee and implement data collection, including program registration and attendance. Track and analyze participant data and evaluation responses, for continuous program improvement and for grant reporting.
  • Compile and document program impact and service levels as needed.
  • Manage accurate timesheet approvals for Youth Counselor staff, to ensure proper payroll.

Professional Development:

  • Seek and participate in learning experiences that enhance programming efforts and supervision responsibilities, as well as meet training requirements set by Girls & Youth department.
  • Develop and/or enrich activity opportunities that engage youth interest and requests.
  • Participate in trainings and development opportunities through Beacons Network.

 

HOURS

  • The Program Coordinator for HIA Beacon Learning Center is present during after-school program hours, including preparation with Youth Counselors before program as well as daily debrief at the end of program. 
    • Program hours = 2:15-5:00pm - Weekly program days are Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday.

 

  • This position is responsible to schedule regular work time in order to be present in the school building during the school day.
  • Additionally, this position is responsible to participate in meetings and trainings with Beacons Network and YWCA Minneapolis Girls & Youth department.

Worksite: Primary work location is Hmong International Academy (1501 N 30th Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55411).

RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Girls & Youth Program Manager, who reports to the Girls & Youth Director of Operations. The Program Coordinator will supervise Youth Counselor staff as direct reports. Critical relationships include Minneapolis Public School staff, Beacons Network staff, community partners, and the Girls & Youth Leadership Team.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years of experience in youth group facilitation with youth form inner city, OR equivalent combination of experience and education.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience.

Proven experience working with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. 

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to relate effectively and work collaboratively with youth, families and professionals, including school personnel of diverse backgrounds.

Experience with and commitment to conflict resolution that models respect for differences, is non-threatening, calm and de-escalating in style.

Ability to set standards, create a positive environment, coach and motivate staff to reach programming goals.

Knowledge of Minneapolis Public Schools, as well as youth serving resources – AND/OR the ability to rapidly develop knowledge of these institutions and resources.

Strong time management and problem-solving skills.

Excellent presentation, verbal and written skills.

Experience with writing reports and documentation of program outcomes.

Proficient in Word and Excel.

Must be CPR and First Aid certified or willing to be certified within first 90 days.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORKING ENVIRONMENT

 

Must have consistent reliable transportation to the school program site, as well as YWCA Midtown facility. Monthly meetings and occasional additional meetings and trainings are held at partnering community organization sites.

Position is highly mobile throughout the school building during programming.

Ability to lift and carry supplies on a regular basis.

Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
