The Position:

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has a full-time opportunity for a Therapeutic Diet Technician (DT), who under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian will be responsible for interacting with clients regarding food preferences, menu selection, the development of individual dietary plans, ensuring clients’ special or therapeutic diets are addressed. The position is split role between inpatient rehabilitation and complex continuing care and the food service department. They will report to the Clinical Operations Manager of Clinical Nutrition and the Director of Food Services.

The position's regular work hours are Monday - Friday, 8 am - 4 pm. Weekend coverage may be required based on operational need.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Liaison between inpatient rehabilitation and complex continuing care and Food Services.
  • Consults with the dietitian and healthcare team regarding nutritional goals for clients.
  • Modify/monitor meals in accordance with diets and changes in health status, as recommended and monitored by the dietitian or physician.
  • Conduct audits to ensure accuracy of diet orders, preference lists, and meals tickets and communicate any discrepancies to the production team.
  • Observe changes in eating habits and bring any changes or concerns to the attention of the dietitian.
  • Communicates necessary client dietary orders to Food Services, including enteral feeds/formula recipes.
  • Responsible for formulary room, inventory of nutrition products, and production of recipes for tube feeds/infant formulas.
  • Documents relevant information and interventions in the client’s medical record.
  • Participates in departmental monthly meetings, quality assurance projects, and collaborates with quality and service improvement initiatives.
  • Complies with workload measurement statistic entry.
  • Other clinical duties as required or delegated by the dietitian or Food Service.

Qualifications: 

  • 2-year college program in food and nutrition management or 4-year university degree in food and nutrition or equivalent.
  • Member of Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (‘CSNM’) required.
  • Completion of the Advanced Food Handler’s certification required.
  • Previous experience working with a paediatric population and children with disabilities would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Meditech software would be an asset.
  • Experience in diet modification and client/patient education would be an asset.
  • Intermediate computer skills and the ability to work with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with clients and families and interprofessional team members.

The Therapeutic Dietetic Technician (DT) employs strategies and through collaboration with others, works to achieve common goals by effectively sharing and applying knowledge and skills in food, nutrition, dietetics, and food services management. The DT demonstrates excellent communication and customer service skills and the ability to work closely with the dietitian and other healthcare professionals.
