JOB SUMMARY:

  • The principal role of this position is to support the patient care team in advancing the practice of professional nursing at Hancock Regional Hospital to achieve optimal outcomes for patients and a positive work environment for staff.
  • This incumbent is accountable for promoting excellence in nursing practice by providing advanced clinical skills and knowledge to enhance quality of patient care and overall patient safety; education to staff, patients, families, students and community; consultation to staff, physicians, hospital administration, and nursing programs as it relates to nursing practice models and nursing research; updated clinical information based on research studies, literature reviews, etc.; critical change agent role to facilitate adaptation to changing healthcare settings and needs; writing of evidence based guidelines and facilitate their implementation.
  • Maintains accountability across units and department lines and provides feedback regarding staff performance and clinical competencies.
  • Serves as a change agent and role model adapting clinical practices to meet demands of the healthcare environment.
  • Develops collegial relationships with physicians, nurses, ancillary staff, administrative staff, referral sources, community members, students and academic institutions.

  • Assists nursing staff in evaluating complex patients' progress, intervening and facilitating optimal patient outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the patient care team to develop and implement interdisciplinary care pathways and protocols based on research findings.
  • Participates in the provision of direct patient care on a periodic basis, maintaining clinical skill, competency, proficiency, and credibility with staff.
  • Teaches and role models the practice of professional nursing for staff and students.
  • Utilizes formal and informal opportunities to educate staff, patients, families and community. Identifies educational needs and coordinates with the patient care team to develop material and programs.
  • Assists in the development of the individual plan of care as needed.
  • Reinforces education through follow up with patients, families, staff and students.
  • Serves as a nursing practice consultant at the level of the individual, unit or department as needed.
  • Consults with non-nursing departments to implement relevant process improvements or changes to enhance patient care and/or the work environment.
  • Identifies, evaluates and disseminates research findings related to the practice of professional nursing.
  • Facilitates nursing research at the department and unit level.
  • Facilitates and assists with data collection related to research projects and clinical evaluations or trials.
  • Utilizes research findings and evidence based practice to recommend improvements/ changes in policies and procedures.
  • Plays leadership role in quality improvement activities.
  • Serves as an analyst, mentor and change agent for colleagues to enhance nursing practice.
  • Collaborates with management on staff development, standards of care, evidence based best practice, policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participates in selection and implementation of new products and processes to support and enhance nursing practice.
  • Role models positive guest relations, collaborative practice and conflict resolution. Promotes the organization's mission, values, and vision.
  • Demonstrates character qualities and values congruent with the organization with all interactions with customers (associates, physicians, students, patients, and families.)
 
Position Requirements

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Registered Nurse (RN)

ADDITIONAL LIENSURE/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing required.
  • Masters of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Certification in area of practice preferred.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3 years of experience as a staff nurse and 1 year as a charge nurse.
  • Demonstrated competence in area of specialization.
  • Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnoses, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and patient care management.
  • Experience with various care delivery models in theory or practice, disease management and clinical guidelines/pathways.
  • Knowledge of principles of adult education theory and techniques.
  • Knowledge of computer programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required.
  • Mandatory Continuing Education, Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance, HIPAA, Infection Control, and education required by accreditation bodies, and scope of practice as defined by Hancock Regional Hospital and the State of Indiana.
