Starting Pay: $45.4052 Hourly ($94,443)
After 1st Year: $47.6619 Hourly ($99,137)
After 2nd Year: $49.9187 Hourly ($103,831)
After 3rd Year: $51.4164 Hourly ($106,946)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the State Bar of Michigan in good standing;
AND either:
Three (3) years’ experience as a lawyer;
OR
Two (2) years’ experience as a Prosecuting attorney
OR
One (1) year experience as a prosecuting attorney AND one (1) year combined experience as a judicial clerk and prosecution internship/externship.
Notice: It is the policy of the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office to encourage career service by Assistant Prosecutors. The salary schedule shall be implemented so that an employee hired as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney I will be advanced to the next level after having successfully completed one (1) year of service as an APA I and receiving a satisfactory rating or higher on their most recent evaluation. The Prosecuting Attorney retains the right to hire at any established level regardless of the number of years of experience prior to hire.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a wide variety of legal tasks in Circuit (Criminal and Family Court), District Court with occasional Probate Court Appearances.
STATEMENT OF TASKS:
- Appears at arraignments, Pretrials, Probable Cause Conferences, preliminary Examination, preliminary hearings, review hearings, dispositional hearings and misdemeanor sentence hearings;
- Represents the People in traffic Enforcement matters before the District Courts;
- Represents the People in Probation Violation and Show Cause matters;
- Conducts felony and misdemeanor trials, juvenile delinquency, neglect-abuse trials and mental commitment trials;
- Interviews complainants and police officers relative to criminal cases the APA is prosecuting to prepare for court hearings;
- Conducts legal research;
- Attends community meetings and law enforcement agency meetings at the direction of the elected prosecutor;
- Assists senior staff in complex litigation matters;
- Provides training to law enforcement community and other prosecutors ;
- Reviews law enforcement requests for arrest warrants;
- Drafts or reviews Search Warrants;
- Prepares and manages forfeiture and nuisance abatement matters;
- Serves on advisory committee to the elected prosecutor as requested.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILTITIES:
- Must be conversant in the Michigan Court Rules, Michigan Rules of Evidence and Michigan Rue of Professional Conduct;
- Ability to conduct computer assisted legal research using WestLaw or Lexis/Nexis;
- Ability to analyze legal problems and present findings in an orderly manner;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Strong interpersonal communication and relationship building skills;
- Proficient in criminal law, neglect abuse law, delinquency matters, drug interdiction, forfeiture law, marijuana law, victim rights law and trauma informed practices;
- Proficient in trial practice;
- Able to attend work regularly and work under very stressful, fast paced conditions;
- Ability to take direction from senior staff members;
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
