Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Team Leader provides leadership to the Global H.O.P.E. (Humanitarian. Opportunities. Progress. Empowerment.) Team, implementing mission mandates and building collaboration with appropriate expressions of the United Church of Christ (UCC) and across the global church. The Team Leader serves as the point of contact with ecumenical humanitarian and development organizations (national and global) of which the UCC is a member. These include (and are not limited to) Church World Service, ACT Alliance, ACT North America, World Council of Churches Specialized Ministries, and National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD). The Team Leader is also responsible for encouraging a collaborative and collegial relationship with Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the UCC, Disciples of Christ Week of Compassion, and other ecumenical partners.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the day-to-day responsibilities for the Global H.O.P.E. office and team including all programs and ministry areas.
  • Responsible for programmatic planning and implementation for international disaster response, international refugee and migration issues, and sustainable development and for ensuring that related networks to support the work are effectively engaged.
  • Serve as UCC national staff liaison with multi-national organizations related to sustainable development, micro credit, refugee resettlement and international disaster relief, response, and recovery – including Growing Hope Globally, Heifer International, Oikocredit, Ecumenical Church Loan Fund, Freedom from Hunger micro-finance loan program, United Nations, World Council of Churches, and ACT Alliance.
  • Assess needs following a disaster - working with the Minister for Disaster Response and Recovery – to determine UCC response.
  • Recommend to the Associate General Minister next steps in UCC response following a disaster, including need to establish an appeal to support the long-term response.
  • Work with the MarCom and Philanthropy teams to facilitate steps in establishing a UCC funding appeal.
  • Provide leadership in educating across the UCC about the United Nations Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) and other development strategies and tools; assist in connecting the work of the Global H.O.P.E. team to the SDGs.
  • Disburse annual support grants, provide recommendations about UCC involvement in sustainable development organizations, and receive UCC-specific funding proposals from each organization collaborating with the Global Relations Ministers of Global Ministries where necessary.
  • Maintain programmatic relationships with appropriate Church World Service offices and staff as well as the offices and staff of multi-national organizations related to the work of all program areas within Global H.O.P.E. with specific attention to sustainable development and international disasters.
  • Oversee and supervise UCC Disaster, Refugee and Migration, and Volunteer Ministries programs and staff.
  • Develop program goals and objectives and evaluate results of programs ensuring prioritization of UCC strategic goals and priorities.
  • Provide fiscal oversight of the team’s budget; review and approve expenditures taking appropriate action when needed.
  • Steward, administer, and provide oversight for all special funds related to Global H.O.P.E. and One Great Hour of Sharing.
  • Provide leadership for Global H.O.P.E. grants review and distribution team including recommendations and allocation of resources according to UCC and team priorities, in response to partner requests and emerging needs.
  • Provide oversight for Global H.O.P.E. communications including Global H.O.P.E. newsletter, webpages, and other communication opportunities.
  • Collaborate in meeting communication and social media needs for the team.
  • Identify and set goals for independent contractors for designated programming and projects when needed.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff adhering to equal opportunity employment and other Common Personnel Policies.
  • Participate in developing programs for integrating the work of the team with other UCC staff teams.
  • Participate in meetings of global partners including ACT Forums, WCC Specialized Ministries, Church World Service, and others as needed, including crisis specific ad hoc groups convened by global partners.
  • Participate at the UCC National Setting as a member of the Ministry Advisory Council, the Mission Planning Council, and the  Leadership Forum.
  • Participate in the organizational and staff life and in collaboration with ministry teams.
  • Report the activities of the Team to the AGM regularly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the AGM.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • A graduate degree in theology and/or international development or equivalent combination of academic study and experience.
  • A commitment to and theological understanding of global and domestic mission in their broad range of concerns; ability to promote and interpret and ecumenical witness and vision of mission.
  • Understanding of UCC polity, including conference, and ecumenical and interfaith relations, understanding of, and support for the ecumenical partnership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through Common Global Missions Board.
  • Understanding of the role of international and national church, and NGO agencies’ roles in responding to disasters as well as understanding of sustainable development methods.
  • Demonstrated financial, program development/management leadership, human relations and public relations skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, cultural, and religious settings with commitment to pluralism within the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission; demonstrated ability to function effectively in a team environment including group consensus decision-making.
  • Ability to travel within the U.S. and globally.
  • Computer literacy skills.

 

Relocation to Cleveland is required.  This position requires work in the Cleveland Office at least 3 days/week.
