Electrician - Journeyman 

Description

Job Purpose

Maintain plant electrical equipment and systems.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Install, modify, and maintain plant electrical equipment such as breakers, contactors, relays, transformers, motors, motor starters, etc., including the bending and installation of necessary conduit and/or cable tray and termination of all cabling.
  2. Perform preventive maintenance inspections on plant electrical and HVAC systems.
  3. Perform predictive maintenance such as thermography and meggering to plant switchgear cabling and large motors.
  4. Perform routine electrical inspections and corrective electrical troubleshooting or investigating maintenance as required on:
    1. 4160 volt/2400 volt/480 volt breakers
    2. Plant lighting systems
    3. Plant DC battery systems and battery chargers
    4. Generator excitation systems
    5. Material handling conveying systems including conveyor drive equipment, dust collection, and dust suppression equipment

Other Responsibilities

  1. Maintain accurate records of equipment conditions and maintenance performed in support.
  2. Maintain a culture of safety within the department. Support the Utility’s safety programs, complete training appropriate for the position, and provide safe working conditions and practices.
  3. Maintain a culture of continuous improvement within the department. Utilize lean principles and other continuous improvement tools in an effort to maximize the efficiency of the department.
  4. Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications

Knowledge

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Four years power plant or heavy industrial electrical experience preferred.
  3. Certified DOL Journeyman Wireman preferred.

Skills

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all audiences, including customers.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and listening skills, with ability to build productive professional relationships and promote a team atmosphere.
  3. Proficiency with use of computers and mobile devices, including email, calendar, Internet browsers, and the Microsoft Office suite of products at a basic level.
  4. Excellent math skills beneficial.
  5. Good problem identification, analysis, and solving skills.
  6. Problem identification, analysis, and solving.

Abilities

  1. Ability to work as part of a team, either as team leader or a member of a team.
  2. Ability to drive results and ensure work is accomplished properly, safely, and in a timely manner.
  3. Ability to work independently, effectively prioritize work, manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adjust work priorities as needed to meet department/organizational objectives.
  4. Must have mechanical aptitude and be comfortable working with hand tools and power tools of all sizes.
  5. Ability to develop, read, and interpret drawings, schematics, specifications, and technical manuals.
  6. Ability to distinguish colors.

Other Position Requirements

  1. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  2. Must comply with the Utility’s Residency Policy.
  3. Must comply with the Utility’s Respiratory Protection Policy.
  4. Must be able to become certified in CPR.
  5. Must be able to attend work on a regular basis and work overtime as needed.
  6. Must maintain a method of communication in order to be contacted by MPW outside normal work hours.

Work Environment

  1. Work environment is primarily in an industrial coal-fired power plant.
  2. Must be able to climb ladders and work from elevated platforms, scaffolding, sky climbers for extended periods under various types of weather/seasonal conditions.
  3. Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  4. Must comply with all safety and site rules at all locations.
