GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

This is a safety-sensitive position in the Public Works Department, functioning as a front line provider of services in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of the City's traffic control and street lighting equipment. When assigned by the Field Manager, individual in this position will also assist other maintenance sections of the Public Works Department.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Provides technical expertise in the following areas: traffic signal installation, construction and repair, outdoor lighting, traffic control, and utility locates.

Performs routine to complex traffic signal, street light, and school beacon maintenance, troubleshooting and repair functions related to signal software, electrical systems, and hardware. Makes field level decisions regarding the operation of traffic signals. Operates or uses a variety of tools and equipment in performance of these duties.

Assists Field Manager and Field Inspector in maintaining, repairing, or installing traffic signals, luminaries, illuminated street names signs, school zone flashers, and other tasks as assigned.

Monitors supply inventories and will replenish stock to maintain adequate levels to meet operational needs.

Conducts preventative maintenance inspections and performs routine maintenance of traffic control and street lighting equipment, and oversees contractor for annual maintenance inspections.

Investigates and responds to complaints regarding traffic signals and street lighting.

Maintains record of daily work events for each signal and lighting visit through the work order and asset management system.

Maintains an accurate inventory of traffic and street lighting equipment.

Performs or coordinates emergency and after hours repair operations.

Provides Public Works/Capital Projects Manager and Field Manager with status reports on projects and tasks assigned.

Installs, removes, and services equipment and tools designated for use by the Streets Section in coordination with various City programs and outside agencies.

Services and maintains assigned equipment and makes minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on related equipment such as checking/servicing fuel, oil and coolant levels; tire pressure and general appearance; takes necessary steps to bring equipment up to operating standards; prepares and maintains usage records.

Complies with and ensures compliance with all organizational values, policies, procedures and all verbal and written instructions.

Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Required in all job descriptions)
  • Knowledge of tools, techniques, and best practices used in performing traffic control maintenance functions and applicable safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as it relates to traffic signal, work zone safety and traffic control.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including responding appropriately to complaints about signal operation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot traffic signal systems including software, electrical systems, and hardware.
  • Ability to read, understand, analyze and interpret a variety of reference materials furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form, including manuals, technical documentation, and user guides.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform activities that require considerable muscular exertion and/or physical strain, as well as continuous mental and/or visual demand where duties are potentially hazardous and require continuous alertness and/or activity.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes overtime and to work a rotating on-call schedule which requires after-hours response.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of personnel and visitors of the City of Lone Tree.
  • Must have the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, e.g. copier, fax machine and personal computer.
  • Demonstrated personal effectiveness, credibility, thoroughness, flexibility, and collaboration skills in adhering to and advancing the City’s vision, mission and values and ethical standards.
  • Education/Experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License (Class R) and a good driving history required.
  • 3-5 years of traffic signal experience or substantially equivalent positions with other public agencies or private contractors.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level II (Field, Bench or Construction Technician) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check and driving record check prior to commencing employment.

Equipment Used, Work Environment and Physical Activities (This is a general list and may not apply to all positions):

Driving: Must be physically capable of operating motor vehicles safely in the normal course of assignments.

Office equipment: Daily use of a copier, scanner, and printer.

Computer equipment: Daily use of a personal computer and MS Office software.

Other equipment: Periodic use of large format printers and copiers.

Language skills: Reads, analyzes, and interprets technical journals, financial reports, and legal document; writes technical and professional reports and correspondence and using proper spelling, grammar, and style; presents information and responds to questions from top management, citizens and large groups.

Mathematical skills: Performs basic mathematical calculations.

Reasoning ability: Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions using a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Physical activities: Sits for long periods of time; may walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, climb, carry and lift for varying periods. Requires continuous and repetitive arm-hand-eye movement.

Lifting: May involve lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. for short periods of time.

Vision and hearing: Must have visual acuity to see and read paper and electronic documents; must be able to answer telephones, communicate conversation and respond to verbal inquiries.

Exposure to environmental conditions: Ability to drive to and physically access all work sites in the office and outdoors to perform duties, potentially in any weather and environmental conditions, including possible exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust, dirt, heat, cold, fumes, gases, odors, noise, wetness and humidity.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a non-exempt full time position, working at least 40 hours per week. The City of Lone Tree’s Public Works Department business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. Actual work schedule will be determined upon hire. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, and on-call required.
