Job Summary:

The Institutional Archives and Collections Intern will gain skills in descriptive metadata, archival rehousing, digital preservation, and hands-on experience with the archives and collections held by the Academy Museum Archives, which include analog documents, ephemera, artifacts, building models, and born-digital material. Primary responsibilities will include processing and cataloging recent acquisitions. Tasks will include creating folder-level records and processing/preserving born-digital materials. The intern will gain experience in the proper handling of archival materials, in archival arrangement and description, and in digital preservation principles.

Other responsibilities include assisting collections management staff with tasks related to museum collections and exhibitions. Training in material handling will be provided as needed. Upon completion, the intern will have an understanding of how documentation and preservation practices intersect in the creation of an institutional archive at a young museum.

This is a limited-term internship position beginning in June 2024 through August 2024. The hourly wage for this role is $16.78.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in cataloging and processing archival collections by rehousing using archival materials, creating/updating database records, and generating digital image documentation as needed.
  • Become familiar with levels of digital preservation and follow workflows for preserving and documenting born-digital materials. The specific processing or cataloging project will depend on the current needs and/or the intern's skills and interests but will focus on documentation of analog and/or digital materials recently acquired from internal museum departments for the institutional repository.
  • Have visibility to areas of registration and collections management throughout the internship.
  • Learn about archival best practices for handling digital and paper materials.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Arts degree in progress in Art History Studio Art, Archaeology, Museum Studies, Film Studies, or related field.
  • A minimum of 2.8 GPA.
  • Some previous museum or archival object handling experience and familiarity with collection databases preferred.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for periods more than 2 hours.
  • Ability to move up to 25 lbs.
