Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:  To effectively communicate and promote the denomination’s awareness-building and storytelling activities through local, regional and national media outlets, both traditional and emerging.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, develop and implement an annual media relations plan and budget with local, regional, and national media outlets (both traditional and emerging), including, but not limited to denominational publications; ecumenical press; and, other commercial media. 
  • Coordinate, write, and distribute the denomination’s press releases through appropriate, highly-visible, and cost-effective channels.
  • Manage and implement media relations on behalf of the National Setting within the Greater Cleveland area, increasing visibility of the National Offices throughout the year, with increased focus on special events, seminars, worship services, and initiatives.
  • Manage and implement media relations, advertising, and overall visibility within local and regional settings for the denomination’s large events, including General Synod and National Youth Event.
  • Achieve feature article placements in secular, civic, and/or mainstream publications.
  • Serve as one of the denomination’s primary writers, providing copywriting and feature article development when requested for internal and external publications.
  • Represent the denomination before ecumenical and civic news organizations, as needed.
  • Respond to media inquiries, either as church spokesperson or a conduit to others who can serve as informed spokespersons.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A college degree in English, journalism, or public relations.
  • A thorough knowledge and history of the United Church of Christ, its officers, structure, and philosophy.
  • A thorough understanding of religious and secular current events combined with a broad general knowledge.
  • Openness to expression from a variety of ethnic and cultural perspectives.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including the ability to write in a clear, concise journalistic (AP) style.           
  • Above-average computer skills, with an ability to understand the difference between effective writing for print publications and the web.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 15% of the time.
