Job Summary

Responsibilities include analyzing vision tests, identifying sight problems, prescribing corrective lenses and eyeglasses. Will also provide mentoring, direct supervision, and technical assistance to Optometry staff. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with the Yellowhawk Mission and Vision statements, policies and relevant laws.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide instruction and training to ensure Optometry staff deliver quality patient care in a responsible, respectful and caring manner.
  2. Responsible to plan, coordinate, assign and review work.
  3. Provides mentoring, direct supervision, and technical assistance to Optometry staff. Review/approve leave requests, evaluate employee performance and initiate discharges and/or disciplinary action.
  4. Diagnosis of visual and ocular problems through external and internal physical evaluation of the eye and adnexa.
  5. Treatment of visual, ophthalmic, and related disorders through prescription of corrective lenses, pharmacological therapy and other standard treatments, consistent with granted privileges.
  6. Provision of emergency eye care including diagnosis and treatment of ocular trauma or pathology on an outpatient basis consistent with granted clinical privileges.
  7. Referral of patients requiring medical or surgical services to the appropriate medical specialty.
  8. Completion of accurate patient care notes and billing documents, which comply with professional, federal, and other applicable guidelines.
  9. Provision of care to inpatients consistent with clinical privileges or in assistance to ophthalmologist.
  10. Responsible for timely electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree.
  2. Valid state license to practice optometry.
  3. Must be proficient in the diagnosis and management of common ocular diseases including conjunctival and corneal disease, anterior uveitis, retinal vascular disease (including diabetic ocular complications), optic nerve disease (including glaucoma), retinal degenerations (including macular degeneration), retinal tears and detachments, as well as routine comprehensive eye exams.
  4. Ability to communicate with a wide range of patient and clinical team personalities.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. A strong sense of workplace professionalism and personal ethics.
  7. Customer-service orientation with excellent interpersonal skills.
  8. Represents Yellowhawk with a respected and viable presence in the community.
  9. Skilled in operational management, coordinating staff schedules, purchase requisitions, equipment maintenance, and standard operating procedures for efficient clinic operations.
  10. Proficiency in management and development, including employee evaluations, career advancement initiatives, coaching and counseling of staff.
  11. Provides valuable contribution to budgetary considerations, accreditations and programs (viz. AAAHC, PCPCH)
  12. Demonstrates the capacity to lead and conduct effective team meetings, fostering an environment for constructive feedback.
  13. Ability to provide in-depth ophthalmological education and training, empowering staff to enhance job performance with a deeper understanding of the field.
  14. Capable of creating and delivering timely reports to administration to facilitate compliance with organizational needs (viz. reports to CEO, Health Commission, Board of Trustees, etc.).
  15. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurance requirements to operate General Services Administration vehicles.
  16. Must submit to and pass a reference and criminal background check.
  17. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  18. Must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of history, culture and health needs of American Indian/Alaska Native communities preferred.
  2. Credentialed with higher education institutions in Optometry to provide preceptorship for those Optometry externs.
