Cognitive Skills Coordinator

Description

Coordinates and facilitates evidence-based cognitive skills groups, including Thinking for a Change Educational Model for adult, felony and misdemeanor offenders referred by the Court and/or Probation Officer with Moderate to Very High ORAS Risk scores. Duties include: following specific curriculum, including communication skills, modeling pro-social behavior, use of redirection techniques, behavioral reinforcement and targeting criminogenic needs, utilization of the program’s treatment model and effective interventions, leading individual/group sessions, instructing clients by utilizing role playing, modeling, reasoning exercises, games, puzzles and audio visual presentations, maintaining individual client logs and notifies the assigned officer of periodic updates and termination status, abiding by grant program descriptions and requirements, scheduling client into group sessions, administers exit evaluations.

 

Performs other duties as assigned. Duties may require use of personal vehicle for County business with mileage reimbursement if County car is not available.

 

Working Shift: 9:00 AM TO 5:00 PM [PART-TIME 16-20 HOURS PER WEEK MONDAY-FRIDAY].

 
Position Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice or related field preferred. Consideration will be given to individuals working toward a degree or certification in the field.

REQUIRED:

  • Must have knowledge in the areas of: Corrections, Cognitive Behavioral techniques, Mental Health and/or Alcohol/Drug addiction.
  • Must be willing to attend training provided in order to obtain certification as a Thinking for a Change Facilitator or any other cognitive skills group as directed.

7) Drug/alcohol testing procedures

10) Policies & Procedures of Portage County Adult Probation Department

11) Sections of the Ohio Revised Code relevant to Adult Probation

12) Pre-Sentence Investigations

 

Position is inherently hazardous or physically demanding work. Exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment, uses or works in proximity to the use of firearms, is exposed to bio-hazardous waste and possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions, has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons, exposure to hazardous driving conditions, exposure to life threatening situations, exposure to needles and other drug paraphernalia, exposure to Hepatitis C and irregular work hours.
