Master Mechanic 

Description

This is skilled automotive and equipment mechanical work approaching the journeyman level. An employee in this class is responsible for performing skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of automotive and specialized mechanical equipment. The employee is responsible for diagnosing and executing repairs needed, reporting time and supplies used on each vehicle serviced or repaired, and ordering parts. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees. The work is assigned by means of verbal and written orders and is carried out independently by the employee in accordance with standard practices of the trade.

Repairs and services automobiles, trucks, tractors, power mowers, and other motorized equipment.

Drives trucks; makes road service calls; and tows in disabled automobiles, trucks, and tractors if unable to make road repairs.

Diagnoses and repairs engines, drive trains, electrical, steering and suspensions, braking systems and components.

Performs preventative maintenance service and inspections on a variety of city owned vehicles and equipment.

Makes minor welding repairs and may use spray paint to touch up weld repair work.

Repairs defective electrical wiring.

Operates various shop equipment including hydraulic jacks, air and electric powered tools, bench grinders and brake lathes.

May operate welding equipment including acetylene torches, arc welders and MIG welding machines.

Does all other mechanical work in accordance with quality standards and practices of the trade for gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.

May supervise work of unskilled or semi-skilled employees.

 
Position Requirements

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Must have a valid driver's license.

Prefer 4 years or more of experience servicing and repairing vehicles and other equipment.

Thorough working knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment, of the mechanic's trade.

Knowledge of the principles and mechanics of all types of internal combustion engines and motorized equipment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to diagnose and repair defects in powered equipment.

Ability to keep simple records.

Ability to order parts for repairs

Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems.

Ability to operate various powered equipment.

Ability to supervise helpers.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Ability to use a variety of hand tools including air and electric powered wrenches, drills, and other standard tools and equipment of the mechanic’s trade.

Ability to recognize and correct potential sources of hazardous material spills.

Must be “team-oriented”.

 
Physical/Environmental Requirements Will use hands and fingers to hold,feel,reach. Required to stand,sit,climb,balance,stoop,crouch and crawl. Vision abilities: close,distance,color,peripheral vision and depth perception. Lifts and moves up to 100 lbs. Exposed to weather conditions and to wet and humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
