Associate Director, Academy Film Archive

Job Summary:

The Film Archive Associate Director is a senior member of the Academy’s staff who will guide the activities of the film archive to fulfill these broad goals: 1) collecting and preserving the significant contributions to both the art and science of the motion picture, 2) advance the archive’s position of leadership among the world’s cinema institutions, 3) preserving the history and legacy of the Academy itself, 4) the promotion of cinema culture utilizing the archive’s collections and resources.

 
Position Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and manage departmental budgets and allocation of departmental resources.
  • Assist the Archive Director in administrative oversight of the Archive including complete oversight of the AFA while the Archive Director is out of the office.
  • Collaborate with Curatorial department in developing relationships with Academy members, filmmakers, donors and collectors.
  • Provide oversight for collection processing and inventory of archival film and video materials, including adherence to departmental standards and database input guidelines.
  • Work with appropriate curatorial staff to develop and solicit collections from partner institutions, private companies and individuals while representing the high standards of the Academy in all discussions and negotiations.
  • Provide prioritization and effective management of staff time and resources for processing incoming collections.
  • Serve as a liaison with other Academy departments and represent the archive’s collections at interdepartmental meetings.
  • Participate in the design, oversight, and implementation of the Academy’s InFrame project which seeks to build a free Searchable Public Database that will allow end users and peer institutions to research individual names and film titles related to underrepresented communities, specifically with respect to social, gender, racial, ethnic, ability, sexual orientation, and cultural identities.
  • Work with Vault Manager and facilities staff to maintain ideal storage conditions for all items in Academy Film Archive’s collection.
  • Represent the Academy in the media, at screenings, professional conferences, industry organizations and on expert panels
  • Identify, recruit, hire, train, manage, supervise and evaluate archive staff members

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree and at least five years of experience working in a library or film archive with management responsibilities.
  • Previous curatorial experience in archive, library or museum setting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience, including at least 3 years project management experience; direct experience in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) related projects or work is advantageous.
  • Exceptional program/project management skills with a proven track record of successful program development, launch and management.
  • Ability to manage individual projects / initiatives as well as annual departmental activities within deadlines and budgets.
  • Exemplary writing, speaking and listening skills in English.,
  • Excellent capabilities in project planning software, spreadsheet software, and presentation software
  • Detail oriented, with a natural orientation for collaboration, efficiency, priority setting and achievement.
  • Strong relationship building skills and the ability to manage across multiple stakeholders and at various levels.
  • Ability to understand and uphold the highest ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, build relationships, and deliver results in a complex, cross-functional organization.

The expected starting salary for this role is $85,000. The actual base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
