Intern - Safety & Training

Description

Muscatine Power and Water - Summer Internship in the Safety & Training Department

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires MPW to have an SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for every chemical that employees are exposed to. This project will audit MPW’s SDS management system verifying the proper SDS for each chemical.

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Management internship does not require prior knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations for Hazard Communication. The internship will help the selected person gain knowledge of those regulatory requirements in the workplace. The intern will have access to support and resources as needed while working independently often.

The intern will focus on updating MPW’s cloud based SDS catalogue. This will include training on the SDS catalogue system. The intern will be responsible for searching materials at MPW facilities and cross-reference for SDSs. A laptop will be used inputting data into an Excel spreadsheet. Through this process, chemicals will be organized by SKU (if available), name, manufacturer, SDS, quantity, department, and area. SDSs will be updated as needed. If material is found without an SDS, a search will be performed until one is located. If an SDS exists in the catalogue and the material is no longer used at MPW the SDS will be archived. Chemicals found and no longer used will be coordinated with Environmental Affairs for disposal.

Job Description:

  • Verify chemicals (what we have and are using)
  • Verify SDS for all chemicals
  • What SDSs can we archive
  • Determine chemical locations (A/O, Generation, Water Treatment Areas, Labs)
  • Dispose of chemicals we no longer use (coordinate w/Environmental)
  • Verify SKU #’s for SDSs (can we add SKU’s to everything)
  • Create and add QR codes to chemical storage areas
  • Research our chemical management system for approval process before purchasing additional products for tracking and SKU verification

Resources:

Safety & Training will train and support the intern and help answer questions as they come up. Daily check-ins will be required with a weekly review of the work being performed. The intern will also consult with Field/Power Plant crews and Supply Chain Services during the process.

Time Frame:

Intern is projected to work 40 hours/week for the entire summer (12 weeks, Approximately May – August). Vacation time can be scheduled within that time frame.

This may or may not be adequate time to finish the entire scope of the project. The opportunity to extend the time may be available.

If the project is completed prior to the end of 12 weeks Safety & Training staff will assign additional tasks within the Safety & Training Department.
