About the Organization Established June 15, 1971, Valley Community Services Board is a publicly funded organization where citizens of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta and Highland Counties can receive Behavioral Health, Substance Use and Developmental Services services. Valley Community Services Board serves as the single point of entry into publicly funded mental health, developmental, and substance use disorder services for these localities.

Valley CSB is a person-centered organization, tailoring treatment to each individual. We value competency and compassion in every service we provide. We are also a resource for educating the public about the nature of mental health, substance use, and developmental disabilities to dispel stereotypes and encourage support for individuals facing those challenges.

Description

As a member of the Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) team, the Peer Bridger provides peer-to-peer support to individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder as they transition from homelessness or psychiatric care to community independent living. The incumbent will collaborate with teammates and colleagues from partner organizations to develop and execute unique, personalized strategies for client care.

Essential functions of the position include:

  • Provide support and encouragement to clients as they navigate the transition from hospitalization or homelessness to stable housing.
  • Coordinate client care services that serve the best interests of the client.
  • Promote person-centered, strengths-based recovery planning and goal setting to foster self-advocacy.
  • Conduct initial and on-going assessments of client strengths and needs in collaboration with PSH teammates.
  • Assist clients in developing positive self-management, problem-solving skills, healthy coping mechanisms, symptom management, and effective communication strategies.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must openly identify as an individual who has personally experienced serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder with one year of sustained wellness in recovery, or closely supported a family member who has experienced SMI or co-occurring disorder.
  • Must be eligible to obtain Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification in Virginia within one year of employment.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Personal experience with homelessness, housing insecurity, or transitioning from psychiatric care to independent living.
  • An appreciation for and support of diversity in all its forms, and a demonstrated ability to interact with or serve individuals with diverse backgrounds, including clients, coworkers, and members of the community.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and successfully overcome interpersonal obstacles in a professional manner.
  • An eagerness to invest in one’s community through service.
