The Community Outreach Forester develops and implements community programming aimed at fostering, growing and educating community partnerships about the urban forest. The incumbent serves as a member of the Education Team, engaging both internal and external stakeholders, and ensuring outreach and educational outcomes with community to promote Casey Trees’ mission of restoring, enhancing, and protecting the tree canopy of the nation’s capital and surrounding jurisdictions.

Compensation and Benefits:

$64,000-$69,000 annually with competitive benefits upon hire, including employer paid premiums for health, dental, vision insurance for employees, paid sick, vacation and holiday time and a 403(b) match after 6 months.

Essential Functions:

The following essential functions are representative of the Community Outreach Forester including, but not limited to:


  • Shapes CT’s community outreach strategy by attending community meetings, leveraging, and cultivating relationships with key community leaders, and increasing CT’s visibility within low canopied and historically marginalized areas of the greater Washington DC area
  • Fosters relationships and develops champions with community-based organizations, faith leaders, elected officials, civic and community leaders that lead to positive engagement of the community and neighborhoods
  • Motivates and directs stakeholders to Casey Trees programing including tree plantings, educational classes, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to guide and inform programing opportunities in targeted areas related to urban forestry
  • Maintains sound relationships with government partners
  • Conducts community outreach, teaches classes, and assists with organization-wide activities and related events
  • Communicates and distributes information/promotional materials including flyers, brochures, publications, press releases, etc.
  • Leads and provides support for trainings, classes, workshops, tours, demonstrations, etc.
  • Collaborates across the organization to execute grants, contracts, programs, and activities


  • Maintains knowledge of horticulture, arboriculture, forestry, and urban forestry
  • Plants, prunes and provides tree care techniques
Position Requirements

Supervisory Responsibilities

The incumbent has no direct reports.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed both indoors (office, classrooms, rec centers) and outside year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather.

The incumbent in this position typically uses the following equipment:

  • Computers, printers, copiers, smartphones, tablets, walkie-talkies, telephones
  • Automobiles, trucks, vans
  • Tree planting equipment such as: shovels, pickaxe, knife, stake driver, buckets, wire cutters, containerized trees, hand pruners, etc.

Physical Demands:

  • While this is primarily a desk job, all CT employees may engage in tree planting/related activities in outdoor environments, year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather.   • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to talk, hear, stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The incumbent will assist in digging holes and with lifting and planting trees. In the office environment, this position would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a fulltime, exempt position, averaging 40 hours a week. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.


Travel is primarily local; occasionally to Casey Tree Farm in Berryville, VA. Some out of the area travel may be expected.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in arboriculture, horticulture, urban forestry, environmental studies, or related field plus one year of experience; or, bachelor’s degree in one of these disciplines
  • Valid driver’s license
  • ISA Certified Arborist credential upon hire, or within the first year of employment
  • Willing to receive and maintain CPR and first aid certification.
  • Professionalism and flexibility when communicating with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills and ability to execute multiple ongoing projects
  • Excellent time management and punctuality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in nonprofit sector
