Intramural Sports Official (Recreational Sports)

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the Coordinator – Intramural Sports and the Student Manager – Intramural Sports, the Intramural Sports Official is responsible for providing a fun atmosphere in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Officials must be able to implement policies and playing rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly.
  • Ability to officiate multiple intramural sports.
  • Knowledge of game rules and intramural policies preferred.
  • Participation in Intramural Sport Officials' Training Clinics
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds, specific needs, or limitations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Educate clients and enforce policies regarding safe and proper use of equipment and facility.
  • Officiate intramural contests.
  • Assist with pre- and post-game logistics and administrative functions.
  • Assist with preparation and inspection of the game site.
  • Provide PR/program promotion and policy education to participants.
  • Attend quarterly officials training clinic(s).
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area.
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats.
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management.
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with staff and co-workers.
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all participants.
  • Provide a friendly, upbeat and customer service-oriented environment at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

Pay Range: $15.50-$15.50 per hour; maximum 20 hours per week.

Position Requirements

This position may require sitting, standing, walking, lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, repetitive use of hands/arms, repetitive use of legs, and eye/hand coordination.
