Description

Position Objective:

Through Ownership pride, the Accountant enhances the experience for members and internal owners by exhibiting versatile, professional, and efficient attributes as well as drive to deliver the “WOW” member service experience to become the Standard of Excellence in day to day operations of the Accounting Team. The Accountant is primarily responsible for posting daily and monthly activity and maintaining the applicable subsidiary ledgers, monthly closing, financial reporting, regulatory/compliance/financial audits, budgeting, and financial analysis for the Credit Union. The Accountant ensures the overall accuracy and integrity of financial data as well as verifies compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and federal/state credit union accounting guidelines in support of Northern’s mission, vision, and strategic direction.

Essential Job Functions:

Proficiently serves as a role model and demonstrates individual commitment to Northern’s Ownership philosophy by:

    1. Exhibiting high energy, a positive attitude, creativity and passion for member service.
    2. Maintaining an active, positive, professional image and reputation for Northern in the community while spreading the Ownership philosophy internally and externally.

    4. Keeping open communication alive by inspiring owner participation in teams, listening to owner ideas, holding meetings and publishing regular announcements.

Proficiently performs daily operating procedures to maintain accounting records in accordance with GAAP by:

    1. Approving Coin and Currency orders, wire transfers, and other treasury operating functions as needed and ensuring information is entered accordingly.
    2. Calculating, initiating, and posting cash account journal entries including transactions for deposits, ACH and share drafts, cash moves, and other Credit Union activities and programs.
    3. Reviewing posting activity and daily balancing conducted by third party vendor partner for the ATM’s. Is prepared to complete or offer support as needed.
    4. Reconciling front line work with source documents and to the Subsidiary and General Ledgers.
    5. Processing home lending transactions, and funding necessary accounts for mortgage and other real estate closings.
    6. Performing all aspects of the daily Treasury function including: Monitoring demand loans due to overnight cash shortages and initiating and recording the loan repayment.
    7. Reconciling and posting the Credit Union’s payroll including processing payroll deduction payments.
    8. Researching and resolving accounting errors and discrepancies.
    9. Assisting, as needed, with all daily Accounting procedures to ensure continuous member service.

Proficiently assists with the monthly/year-end general ledger closing, and financial statement reconciliation in preparation for all entities by:

    1. Performing reconciliations of all subsidiary ledger accounts, such as: Investments, Fixed Assets, Prepaids, and Accruals
    2. Maintaining the Credit Union's capital/fixed asset portfolio, depreciation schedules and asset inventory.
    3. Analyzing, recording, and posting appropriate journal entries upon receipt of the month-end reports.
    4. Generating various reports such as:
      1. Monthly collateral reports;
      2. Loan participation reports and reconciliations;
      3. Net change in balance reports;
      4. Analysis of allowance, shares, loans, and budget variance reports, as directed.
    5. Preparing monthly reconciliation statements for all material General Ledger accounts; assisting with financial statements and analysis.
    6. Assisting, as needed, with all monthly and annual Accounting analysis, reconciling, and closing work.

Proficiently assists with the monthly/year-end general ledger closing, and financial statement reconciliation in preparation for all entities by:

    1. Completing monthly Board and Supervisory Committee reports in a timely manner.
    2. Generating monthly/annual reports for presentation to management.
    3. Collaborating with the Accounting team and assisting with the preparation and reporting of audit information by:
      1. Compiling and delivering documentation to internal and external auditors,
      2. Being a point of contact for questions, concerns and following up on audit recommendations,
      3. Providing support with the preparation of audited financial statements and notes.
    4. Compiling regulatory information and submitting the monthly, quarterly, and annual regulatory/tax returns.
    5. Ensuring that accounting records and reports comply with GAAP and governmental regulations.

Proficiently assists with the Credit Union’s budgeting process by:

  1. Compiling data, preparing various reports, and analyzing accounts with team managers to effectively monitor variances, preparing the yearly budget, and Finance & Operations Plan.
  2. Reviewing and analyzing loan and share budget projections and making recommendations.
  3. Collaborating with team managers to prepare annual operating expense budgets.

Effectively assists with financial reporting, Credit Union audits, and regulatory reporting by:

  1. Learning and demonstrating ALM basic concepts to achieve Credit Union goals and initiatives.
  2. Calculating and updating model assumptions including: monthly interest rates, discount rates, prepayment speeds calculation and revisions, and ensuring decay rates are updated annually.
  3. Preparing quarterly ALM reports and assisting in the analysis for changes to model assumption.
  4. Preparing stress tests on model assumptions annually and supporting or independently presenting findings and conclusion to the ALCO Committee.
  5. Preparing reports on ALM projects to present to the ALCO committee.
  6. Effectively growing knowledge around interest rate risk and the maintenance of the ALM model.

Proficiently ensures the strength of the Accounting team and the Credit Union by:

  1. Reviewing controls and implementing recommendations to strengthen controls for the safety and soundness of the Credit Union.
  2. Making recommendations based on funding analysis and financial activity to improve overall organizational efficiencies
  3. Collaborating with the Accounting team to develop goals and initiatives.
  4. Reviewing and updating internal policies and procedures to ensure continued compliance and efficient operations.

Other Job Functions:

  • Identifies and participates in educational programs such as online training resources, schools and/or conferences to continually develop greater knowledge and expertise in state and federal regulations.   • Assists and provides backup support for the Accounting and Management Teams as well as other teams as needed.
  • Obtains, maintains, and applies a thorough working knowledge of credit union history and philosophy, regulations, and policies and procedures of the credit union as well as all other credit union products and services and delivery channels.
  • Participates in the future of the credit union by offering constructive suggestions that may attract new members and/or enhance product penetration and improve efficiencies.
  • Reports all suspected fraud activity immediately to the appropriate team.
  • Performs all other duties as they pertain to this position.
  • Telecommuting work environment combined with occasional travel between relationship centers.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 2 to 5 years of accounting experience required.
  • A professional level of self-direction and autonomy is expected of this position. The use of sound judgment to recognize when matters need to be escalated to leadership is required.
  • The incumbent must be a persuasive communicator with excellent command of verbal and written presentations. Clear communication with internal and external owners is required along with the ability to effectively develop and motivate people in one-on-one and in small group situations is essential.
  • Creative problem solving abilities, project management skills and strong organizational skills are required.
  • Must possess excellent mathematical skills and demonstrate ability to be accurate and attentive to detail.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and have demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a team environment, in addition to a willingness to assist others.
  • Proven ability and maturity to handle confidential/sensitive information in a professional manner is required.
  • A full working knowledge and ability to utilize a broad range of PC-based software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and other internal database programs. The ability to perform advanced Excel functions, analysis and reporting is required.

Ability to conduct training, communicate at panel discussions, and make professional presentations.

Compensation:

The base pay range for this position is $24.64 - $32.34 per hour. Exact offers will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
