Audio Visual Student Technician II (University Union)

 

Definition and Purpose 

Under the supervision of the Coordinator – Event Management, the Audio Visual Student Technician II is responsible for the advanced set-up and operation of all ASI audio visual equipment and services. The audio-visual function continues to be a major part of the services offered in ASI-managed facilities. This department provides the Cal Poly community with the ability to host meetings and  events (i.e. speakers, presentations, concerts, movies, etc.) and requires a technician to work in all areas of the building.

Educational Requirements and Qualifying Experience 

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Cal Poly with a minimum of 6 units. All ASI student staff must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at Cal Poly. Graduate students must carry 4 units/3.0 cumulative GPA at Cal Poly. 
  • Experience in the operation of audio-visual equipment including stage lighting, sound reinforcement, and computer projection systems. 
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs. 
  • Ability to work in elevated locations (ladders, catwalks, etc.). 
  • Ability to work mornings, evenings, and weekend shifts as required. 
  • Reliable, self-motivated, takes initiative, and works well with minimum supervision. 
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of attention to detail 
  • Ability to be highly organized. 
  • Ability to make routine decisions based on specific criteria/guidelines and apply judgment in performing work assignments. 
  • Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skills. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Positive attitude and flexible schedule. 
  • Strong mechanical/electrical/technical ability. 
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide support and training to the Audio Visual Student Assistants. 
  • Serve as technical director or stage manager for high-profile events.  Delegate tasks as needed.   
  • Maintain mechanical and electrical maintenance of all audio-visual equipment owned by ASI. 
  • Must hold a CA Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to our insurance underwriters.
  • Set up audio visual equipment in the University Union, UU Plaza, and Rec Center  
  • Set up and operate stage lighting systems for events. 
  • Design and program event lighting. 
  • Perform live sound mixing for concerts and other events. 
  • Set up and operate ASI audio systems and equipment (speakers, microphones, etc.) . 
  • Set up and operate  ASI  projection equipment. 
  • Program building lighting controllers, as necessary. 
  • Assist Facility Supervisor in overseeing sponsoring group’s use of building facilities. 
  • Assist the Event Logistics Student Assistant in technical planning with sponsoring group. 
  • Inform the Coordinator – Event Management or the Audio Visual Student Manager of problems to ensure production and quality are not compromised. 
  • Maintain an on-call status whereby he/she is experienced in addressing mechanical problems outside work schedule. 
  • Maintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work area. 
  • Attend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreats. 
  • Provide training and updates in meetings as requested 
  • Provide quality customer service for all staff and customers. 
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management. 
  • Maintain prompt hours and follow absence procedures. 
  • Maintain a working relationship with staff and co-workers. 
  • Adhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Commitment to student development and leadership. 
  • Assure safe usage of all equipment.   
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Duties and Responsibilities 

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.

Period of Employment 

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause. 

 

Compensation and Hours 

Pay Range: $16.00-$16.00 per hour; 10-20 hours per week needed (maximum 20 hours per week).
