Projection Engineer 


Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Projection Engineering, the Projection Engineer will be responsible for the technical upgrades, technical operation and maintenance of the Academy's presentation facilities including the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Linwood Dunn Theater, David Geffen Theater, and Ted Mann Theater.

The hourly union wage for this role is $58.33.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the installation of new equipment, schedule regular maintenance and be able to perform software upgrades with manufacturer representatives.
  • Maintain the four Academy theaters’ state-of-the-art equipment already in service; resolve problems that occur.
  • Work with the projection staff to provide support for the ever-expanding technical requirements of the Academy's programs.
  • Implement the Theater Standards Committee’s initiatives and projects and Academy Tech Council programs.
  • Provide support for other Academy divisions as determined by the office of Projection Engineering.


Position Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • This is a Local 695 Union position, membership required.
  • Candidates should have experience in installation and alignment of motion picture projection and sound systems, knowledge and ability to manage complex systems and the ability to create necessary documentation.
  • Knowledge of current sound system controllers (Audio Architect & Dante), amplifiers, digital routing systems, digital signal processing and theater automation systems (Crestron).
  • A thorough understanding of laser digital cinema, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm projection systems and digital cinema servers is desired.
  • A strong background in installation and implementation of electronic equipment and systems is necessary.
  • Candidate must be capable of understanding and using the programming and software applications for installed systems.
  • Knowledge in networking infrastructure is a plus.
  • BSEE or equivalent experience.
  • The candidate will be required to interact with in-house projection staff, Academy members and technical committees.


  • The position requires the ability to speak fluent English with strong reading and writing skills.
  • Film post-production knowledge desired.
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekend when needed.
