Status Temporary (until June 2025, with the possibility of extension). Work schedule: Mondays to Thursdays 9am - 6pm and Fridays 9am - 12pm. Occasional evening/weekend events.

The Carlington Youth program aims to provide vulnerable youth in the community with opportunities to engage in activities and positive experiences that promote self-development, community engagement, as well as academic achievement. Youth Outreach Worker (YOW) works as a part of the Children and Youth team to maintain and expand services of the Students Will All Graduate (SWAG) and Youth Programs in general. YOW is responsible for providing one-on-one support to high-risk youth ages 12 to 18 to connect them with the existing academic and emotional support, case management, crisis intervention, as well as group-based activities to promote social recreation, facilitate academics support, and life skills development. The YOW will reach out to families and liaise with school staff, and community partners to identify and address the needed support. Youth Outreach Worker (YOW) also work with other youth serving agencies and community resources to coordinate youth activities and services in the community.

Program-Related Activities

  • Plans, develops, and delivers all aspects of the Students Will All Graduate ( SWAG) program by providing one on one support to youth as well as group facilitation that enhances youth welfare and development, and academic success.
  • Ensures compliance of SWAG activities with program objectives through a balance of academic support, social and recreational activities, mentoring, healthy food choices and nutrition, and life skill development.
  • Performs intake assessment, supportive listening, case management and some crisis intervention functions.
  • Acts as a liaison with school staff, students, and parents by helping to identify needs of each group and link individuals and groups to resources such as specific academic, social and emotional supports; and to identify gaps and needed supports and approaches to delivering those supports.
  • Plans and delivers special youth event such as workshops, outings, community-based events, and others as needs are identified.
  • Provides support and planning for youth activities in the community at large
  • Support the smooth running of overall youth team programs and provide support and coverage when needed.
 
Position Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline or equivalent combination of some post-secondary education and significant experience in Youth program development, implementation and group facilitation.

Professional Experience

  • Three to five years full-time relevant experience working with vulnerable youth, providing individual support related to social, family, and/or school experiences, in a community setting.
  • Experience organizing and delivering group-based activities for youth.
  • Experience in new program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, preferably relating to youth, and/or mentorship programs.
  • Experience establishing networks and nurturing partnerships with relevant community programs and service providers.
  • Experience with and an understanding of the barriers and challenges faced by youth in culturally diverse, low-income communities.
  • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high-needs, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities.
  • Experience in health promotion including community development.
  • Experience providing after school or homework club programs.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community- based organization.

Key Competencies

  • Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics, group facilitation appropriate to youth from variety of cultural backgrounds, program development and program evaluation.
  • Knowledge of community development principles.
  • Experience in crisis intervention, group work, outreach, and mentorship programs.
  • Experience with event coordination, partnership–building, sport, and engagement of youth in sports and recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of Ontario secondary school curriculum and challenges, including knowledge of approaches to providing support to youth with special educational challenges and needs.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources, in particular services for youth which can support their individual, emotional and social development.
  • Proficiency in current assessment, counselling, case management and crisis intervention techniques as related to providing supportive listening to clients.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.

Linguistic Profile

  • This position is not designated under Carlington’s French Language Services Plan.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Fluency in a third language relevant to our client population is an asset.

Salary Range $25.33/hour - $29.79/hour
