Position: Streets Maintenance

Department: Public Works

Reports to: Streets Supervisor

Salary: $23.90 - $34.39/hourly DOQ

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Streets Supervisor, this position performs a wide variety of maintenance functions. Work related duties streets, heavy equipment operations, refuse collection, snow/ice removal, snowplowing, buildings and grounds maintenance, and assist in other departmental divisions within Public Works. Must have or be willing to obtain a Colorado Class B CDL within six months.

Supervision Received:

Works under the direct supervision of the Streets Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

Lead work/supervision over Community Service workers as needed.

 
Position Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks which may involve general construction, maintenance and repair activities in connection with streets, utilities, parks, recreation facilities, grounds, buildings and equipment maintenance.
  • Be available for on-call on a rotating basis and be within a 30 minute range from Gypsum.
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of water and sewer lines, service connections and valves as needed.
  • Assist with water and/or wastewater plant operations as needed.
  • Assist with planting, watering and maintaining trees and shrubs at park sites, Town facilities and right-of-way, assist with mowing and weed control in all areas of Town, performs general custodial work at public facilities, as needed.
  • Oversee community service workers and keep records of time worked to ensure worker(s) fulfill their obligation, as needed.
  • Attend meetings or seminars necessary for increased job performance.
  • Manually distribute information, as needed, to inform citizens of important new changes or information vital to the Town's operations.
  • Perform general inspections and upkeep of Town vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned or apparent.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • The operation and routine maintenance of trucks and light road construction equipment.
  • The proper use and maintenance of hand/power tools commonly used in maintenance work.
  • Safety practices and principles related to road construction and/or flood control work.
  • Basic computer skills to include the ability to use Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Learn new software programs utilized within Public Works.
  • Safely drive and operate heavy equipment, vehicles, the trash truck, and power/hand tools.
  • Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memorandums.
  • Willingness to learn additional duties, as needed.
  • Work effectively in both self-directed and team environments.
  • Establish successful working relationships internally as well as externally.
  • Communicate with the public, read, write and understand English, maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Participate in an after-hours/on-call rotating schedule within the department.
  • Attend meetings or seminars necessary for increased job performance.
  • Equipment maintenance and operations.
  • Safe and efficient operation of vehicles, equipment and power-driven/hand tools.
  • Excellent written and oral business communications with citizens and outside agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications with team members, peers, supervisors, citizens, and outside agencies.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • One year of experience in general maintenance work and refuse collection.
  • Previous municipal government experience is desirable.
    Or
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's license.
  • Must be available to be on call as assigned by the Parks Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor.
  • Position may require considerable contact with town, local and state officials; as well as major developers and the general public. Requires considerable interpersonal skills in representing the needs of the Town and in enforcing applicable policies and/or ordinances in an impartial manner.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to various outdoor weather conditions, bending, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, noise and/or fumes on an on-going basis. Must be capable of lifting up to 60 lbs.
