Legislative and Outreach Specialist 


Position Objective:

To initiate, execute, and oversee PETA's national outreach and legislative efforts related to companion animals

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Oversee the development and implementation of various projects designed to educate citizens and officials about proper and responsible guardianship of companion animals

• Approach, motivate, and assist individuals regarding the initiation of legislative efforts in behalf of companion animals

• Develop and maintain relationships with officials and legislators in jurisdictions that have passed or are considering or trying to pass legislation affecting companion animals

• Research and pursue networking opportunities in order to further the department's outreach and legislative efforts

• Liaise with the FSAP Legal Department regarding legislative efforts and lobbying activities
• Seek media opportunities and conduct media interviews regarding the department's legislative efforts

• Oversee and regularly provide input on PETA's Web pages dedicated to educating the public and motivating citizens to get involved in legislation

• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Position Requirements

• Degree in a related field or equivalent experience

• Demonstrated extensive working knowledge of the legislative process

• Proven experience developing and maintaining professional relationships

• Demonstrated ability to professionally deliver arguments and to address and overcome objections

• Proven ability to conduct in-depth research and handle many issues simultaneously

• Demonstrated exceptional written and verbal communication skills

• Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments without direct supervision

• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle

• Ability and willingness to travel

• Must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid U.S. driver's license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record

• Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times

• Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues

• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
