Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant

Job Overview:

 

Performs phlebotomy for the laboratory.  Instructs patients on special specimen requirements.  Maintains records for the lab.  Enters orders for laboratory testing into the laboratory information system (LIS).  Performs laboratory testing as directed by the Laboratory Manager once proficiency is established. This position requires accuracy and neatness.

Responsibilities:

 

  1. Collects blood samples and culture specimens for procedural actions and testing.  Documents the collection information for all sample collections including labels and requests.
  2. Processes samples and requests.
  3. Must maintain a good working knowledge of the laboratory LIS.
  4. Performs clerical duties as designated.
  5. Performs laboratory tests as designated by the Laboratory Manager.
  6. Maintains the phlebotomy area in a neat and orderly fashion.
  7. Adheres to Universal Precautions rules and regulations and safety and infection control policies and procedures.
  8. Operate routine manual and/or automated equipment in order to perform assigned duties.
  9. Maintains quality control data and all appropriate records as required by the department and the various regulatory agencies.
  10. Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  11. Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies.
  12. Exhibits flexibility. Proficient in providing phlebotomy and clerical coverage in all assigned locations.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school education or equivalent.
  2. Experience in phlebotomy preferred.
  3. Ability to work well with the public and other members of the clinic.
  4. Ability to communicate well.
  5. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
