JOB SUMMARY: The Shift Leader RN assumes a leadership role in the department. They are responsible to coordinate with members of the team to ensure departmental responsibilities. They will be a shift leader that ensures delivery of safe quality care, provides mentorship and coaching to team members and is supportive of attaining organizational goals. The Shift Leader RN may have a patient care assignment, they provide direct nursing care to patients and collaborates with the nursing team utilizing the nursing process. The Shift Leader RN is responsible for the coordination of unit shift activities and oversees assigned personnel. They will offer feedback for annual appraisals and offer appreciation and gratitude to team members. They will assist to identify and resolve issues and to report pertinent information to the appropriate management person. They will be involved in service recovery and initiatives to support a positive work environment. The Shift Leader RN performs duties and responsibilities in a manner adhering to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures and in compliance with professional practice standards and the Indiana State Nurse Practice Act.

The RN is qualified to perform a nursing intervention defined as administration of moderate sedation (conscious sedation) and can monitor the patient's response and provide necessary physiological support during a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure. The RN will receive initial education on hire in moderate sedation and will have an annual competency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrates knowledge and technical skill necessary for providing competent, comprehensive and age-specific patient care.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities including ability to give and follow instructions accurately and the ability to delegate and supervise non-licensed personnel.
  • Serves as a professional role model for others.
  • Exhibits necessary response/intervention to changes in patient condition.
  • Provides and documents care consistent with hospital, departmental and unit policies/procedures/protocols.
  • Demonstrates competence in clinical/technical skills performed.
  • Prepares patient/families for discharge by providing information/education throughout the hospital stay and reviewing at discharge.
  • Demonstrates ability to teach/instruct patients, families and/or colleagues.
  • Demonstrates computer and keyboarding skills necessary to provide a complete and accurate electronic medical record.
  • Functions in a professional manner under stressful or emergency conditions.
  • Utilizes effective verbal, non-verbal and written forms of communication.
  • Works effectively with others consistently demonstrating tact, discretion, diplomacy and a commitment to teamwork and Patients First.
  • Duties include but not limited to: unit staffing assignments and maintaining accurate assignment sheet, charge report, communication with department manager/director regarding staffing needs/changes, throughout the shift, being a resource to staff, ensuring completion of daily department tasks and regulatory compliance, following policy/procedure and the chain of command.

  • Collaborates with Nursing Supervisor for patient staffing/activity/care.
  • Displays/exhibits self-directed growth by seeking educational opportunities to improve knowledge/skill.
  • Participates on appropriate house-wide committees as approved by the department leadership.
  • Contributes to implementing and supporting progressive change.
  • Makes suggestions to solve patient care or unit problems.
  • Identifies areas of quality improvement and offers suggestions/recommendations.
  • Assists with orientation of new staff.
  • Attends and participates in unit/departmental meetings/in-services at least 75 percent of the time or as assigned.
  • Adherence to attendance and punctuality per policy.
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement activities and identifies new opportunities.
  • Completes assigned responsibilities in an efficient, timely manner.
  • Exhibits effective organizational skills that assist in decreasing and/or eliminating overuse of man-hours.
  • Promotes a positive work environment.
  • Recognizes impact of actions on co-workers and other departments and interacts in a manner conducive to teamwork.
  • Treats staff from all departments, co-workers, patients, and families with respect.
  • Verbally communicates directions, answers to questions, etc. in a timely manner to patients, families, visitors, physicians, staff members and other departments.
  • Collaborates with other members of the health team regarding patient care needs and responsibilities and delegates as appropriate.
  • Utilizes appropriate chain of command.
  • Delivers patient care in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner that respects individuals' right to privacy, dignity, respect, and confidentiality at all times.
 
Position Requirements

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Registered Nurse (RN)

ADDITIONAL LICENSURE/CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse license with the state of Indiana.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
  • Other certifications as required by assigned area of work (i.e., ACLS, PALS).

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Mandatory Continuing Education:
  • Annual dept. specific and hospital wide mandatories (Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance, Infection Control, etc.), and education required by regulatory, accreditation bodies, scope of practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.
