Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Assists in developing and implementing a high quality, nurturing, anti-bias, developmentally appropriate environment, utilizing YWCA’s ELM curriculum for a classroom with a high percentage of at risk children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist in the smooth operation of the classroom as described below:

  • With the classroom staff team, develop and implement developmentally appropriate, anti-bias, multi-cultural curriculum for the classroom by following YWCA’s ELM Curriculum.
  • Foster a classroom environment conducive to the long range curriculum objectives.
  • Ensure nurturing, culturally sensitive care for each child.
  • Respond to and/or refer families’ questions, suggestions and concerns to the Lead Teacher, Teacher, or Assistant Teacher(s).

Handle overall site needs and all record keeping as described below:

  • Maintain health and safety and carry out emergency procedures.
  • Actively pursue professional development.
  • Understand and interpret the YWCA mission to children, staff and families.
  • Complete 2% of hours as in-service training per year.

 

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Lead Teacher who reports to the Early Childhood Education Director. The incumbent will interact with the Lead Teacher, Teacher, Assistant Teacher, Associate Teacher, Teacher Aides, volunteers, substitutes, children and parents.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

Education and Experience

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma/ General Education Degree (GED).
  • Must have a minimum of six months of experience working in a group setting with children ages 0-9 years.
  • Have the ability and desire to work with special needs children and/or at risk families.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to parents and co-workers.
  • Ability to serve and meet the needs of the customers (parents, children and co-workers) in an exceptional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with customers to gain their trust, respect and involvement with activities.
  • Ability to build constructive and effective relationships with parents, children, and co-workers; uses diplomacy and tact; can diffuse even high-tension situations comfortably.
  • Acts with a need to finish responsibilities.
  • Seeks and is proactive in finding challenging opportunities and responsibilities for self-development.

**After six months of employment, must be able to obtain the preferred qualifications (below) or must agree to an education plan to obtain the preferred qualifications through the YWCA Educational Support Program within the next 12 months.

Preferred

  • Possess a Child Development Associate (CDA) OR 12 college/university credits related to Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Child Development.
  • Currently certified in First Aide and/or CPR.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.  Individual must have the ability to get to and from various sites/events/meetings in the metro area on an occasional basis.
