Description

The Senior Accountant provides accounting support within the Capital Area Food Bank’s (CAFB) Finance Department. The overall responsibilities include a variety of activities including payroll processing, administration, and reporting. The Senior Accountant will also perform Inventory General Ledger reconciliations, assist with the annual audit, maintain internal controls, provide quality and timely services to both internal and external customers and make recommendations for process improvements.

Essential Functions

Payroll Processing, Administration & Reporting – 50%

  • Perform all payroll functions including posting of timesheets and labor allocations
  • Prepares journal entries to record payroll expense and payments in the General Ledger
  • Process all payroll related payments and calculations such as final PTO pay out, deductions and garnishments
  • Research, track and resolve any payroll payment related questions and rectify discrepancies
  • Maintain payroll records to ensure all documents/responses are complete for each payroll process
  • Reconcile all benefit accounts such as 401k, FSA
  • Reconcile all payroll taxes including quarterly unemployment taxes to ensure monthly employee withholdings match the payments/reports provided by the payroll company
  • Reconcile quarterly 941s and W2s
  • Makes timely payments and data uploads to the organization’s retirement administrator and assists with periodic reporting conducted for IRS compliance.

General Accounting & Financial Reporting - 40%

  • Monitors inventory transactions, updates general ledgers, gathers and analyzes inventory-related data
  • Performs a variety of month-end close procedures and month-end reconciliations related to inventory balancing
  • Prepares reports and provides data as requested for the Controller and other managers
  • Compiles data for input into various reports and forms, checking for completeness and accuracy
  • Supports efficiency gains throughout the organization through the identification of streamlining opportunities.

Audit Support – 10%

  • Assists with operational and financial audits, the preparation of audit schedules and the organization’s financial statements

Miscellaneous

  • Performs other related duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field or;
  • At least five to seven years of increasingly responsible accounting and analytical experience
  • Strong technology skills are crucial, including understanding of complex ERP systems and related system integrations

  • Knowledge and understanding of key accounting policies, procedures and concepts.
  • A self-starter who possesses attention to detail
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple assignments
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and adhere to departmental timelines
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to handle access to sensitive information with confidentiality, impartiality, and neutrality.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues at varying levels within the organization
  • Commitment to the Food Bank’s mission, vision and values.

Reporting:

  • Reports to the Controller 

Schedule:

  • Hybrid schedule available
  • Regular work hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm
