Internship Objective/Job Description:

Provide an opportunity to gain experience in the fields of engineering and public works. The internship should strengthen area(s) where the student is lacking in real-world knowledge and experience. The internship will be within the Sumter County Public Works Engineering Group. Interns will gain functional knowledge in a vast assortment of engineering and project management areas. Interns will have an opportunity to participate and gain knowledge in the activities within the assigned workgroup including but not limited to: permitting process and review, drainage and roadway design and construction review, construction inspection, project scheduling, project budgets, surveying, stormwater and pavement asset management, watershed studies, highway signage and signalization, and roadway striping.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.

Currently enrolled as a college student or a recent baccalaureate graduate.

Desired Majors:

Students must have a Pre-Engineering educational background with future studies in Project Management or Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering.

Essential Functions

Assists Engineers with the reviewing, planning, financing, acquisition, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of county roadways, right-of-ways, bridges, stormwater drainage and utilities. Provides technical input on the Development Review Plan.

Assist Engineers with outside contractors, including, but not limited to: architect, engineers, contractors, and specialist. Reviews engineering plans and studies, check preliminary and final designs, participate in project meetings and negotiations.

Assists Engineers in tracking the progress of road construction and other capital projects by visiting construction projects at frequent intervals to assure that plans, specifications, codes, and regulations are followed. For projects behind schedule, works with engineers to develop a plan of action and recommendation for implementation.

Assists Engineers in assuring the accurate review and interpretation of specifications, plans, service agreements, codes, regulations, permit conditions, standards, and laboratory analysis. Reviews collision reports, traffic safety data and develops safety projects.

Assists Engineers in coordinating with regulatory and regional agencies related to Traffic and Stormwater Engineering Projects.

Provides assistance in the development of specifications and details as needed.

Note:

In case of emergency or crisis (hurricane, flood, etc.) position maybe required to respond/perform duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

 
Position Requirements

Desired Skills/Experience:

Data entry, communications skills, and database management. CADD.

Intern are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week and will not to exceed 40 hours per week. The internship will not exceed the length of six (6) months.
