About the Organization Established June 15, 1971, Valley Community Services Board is a publicly funded organization where citizens of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta and Highland Counties can receive Behavioral Health, Substance Use and Developmental Services services. Valley Community Services Board serves as the single point of entry into publicly funded mental health, developmental, and substance use disorder services for these localities.

VCSB is looking for our next Peer Recovery Specialist! A Peer is a partner who provides support to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. As part of the Adult Mental Health Services team, the Peer plays a vital part in an individual's road to recovery by acting as a bridge between the individual and their treatment providers.


  • Sign-on bonus of $500, included in full with the first paycheck.

Summary of Essential Functions

  • Conducts regular reviews of clients' strengths and needs.
  • Helps clients develop and utilize healthy coping mechanisms, positive self-management techniques, problem-solving skills, symptom management, and effective communication skills.
  • Supports the development of self-advocacy skills through person-centered, strengths-based recovery planning and goal setting.
  • Empowers clients to take a direct, proactive role in developing and updating their ISP and Recovery Resiliency Wellness Plan.
  • Provides crisis support as needed in partnership with other team members.
  • Coordinates treatment services with other agencies, including, but not limited to education, consultation, and technical assistance as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Graduation from Peer to Peer Support Specialist Training.
  • Eligible to become a Certified Peer Recovery Specailsit in Virginia.
  • Must have personally experienced mental health or substance use challenges and currently celebrating at least one year of recovery, or be closely related to or a guardian for an individual who experiences mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
