Description

Definition and Basic Function: A Behavior Specialist gathers and charts data related to individual behavior and models behavior intervention strategies, and assists direct support professionals and instructional support staff in the implementation of individual's Behavior Support Plans (BSP) and Behavior Intervention Plans (SIP). Provides support to assist teaching staff with instructing and assisting students having communicative or physical disabilities. Performs a variety of general residential and community based assistance duties.

Accountability: Residential Director and works under the direct supervision of the designated residence manager(s).

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and updates records related to the development and implementation of individual BSP’s or BIP’s.
  • Collects and charts behavioral data.
  • Provides support to DSPs in monitoring individual student behavior.
  • Implements individuals' BSPs and BIPs home and community settings.
  • Models the use of plan methodologies in increasing or decreasing target behaviors.
  • Performs individual observations at assigned sites for the purpose of initial training and ongoing support, including follow-up activities related to data collection.
  • Completes required documentation and reports.
  • Provides direct behavior intervention support in Pathway classrooms, integrated settings and natural environments.
  • Prepares instructional materials and assists direct support professionals with the development of behavior support plans, and assists with the evaluation of individual performance and development. • A • May position individuals in mobility assistance devices.
  • Closely observes behavior to identify potential problems.
  • Minimum Qualifications: Employment Eligibility: Bachelor or Master’s Degree in psychology, social work, special education, human services, or a related field of study.
  • Experience working with special populations within a residential setting.
  • Training and/or experience in utilizing specialized instructional techniques such as Applied Behavior Analysis.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of positive behavior intervention strategies.
  • Skills necessary to adapt materials and strategies based on individual age and developmental level.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and adapt and modify strategies, as necessary.
  • Ability to collect, organize and graph behavioral data.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.

Physical Requirements:

  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands:
  • occasional lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching; reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a telephone and enter data into a computer.
  • Facility to sit at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Facility to see and read, with or without visual aids, laws and codes, rules, policies and other printed matter, and computer screens and printouts with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and to hear and understand speech on the telephone with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations, in training sessions, and other meetings with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • When applicable, facility to determine and differentiate colors with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • When applicable, facility to drive an automobile or to arrange a consistent method of transportation.

Work Schedule: This is a part time position, 10-25 hours per week. Scheduled hours may vary.

Job Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED. At least two years of human services experience can be substituted for the high school diploma or GED. Additional education and / or experience in human services is preferred. Must also have a valid driver's license. Must have at least two years of driving experience to transport individuals to and from activities, appointments, and workshops, using Jessica & Friends Community vehicles. Must submit to a criminal background check, a driver's record check, an initial physical, and a substance screening.
