Job Summary

The Community Outreach Specialists and Garden Assistant improves the health of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation community through planning and implementing health promotion and disease prevention programs. In addition to clinical outreach, the Community Outreach Specialists and Garden Assistant will work alongside the Community Gardener and assist with general maintenance and programming related to the community garden sites. All duties and responsibilities will be performed in accordance with the Yellowhawk Mission and Vision statements.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. The focus of the Community Outreach Specialists and Garden Assistant is to expand access to and engagement with health promotion opportunities-- including but not limited to: physical activity, food systems and nutrition information and health education.
  2. Assists with the planning and ongoing maintenance of Yellowhawk Garden Sites. This includes upkeep on the appearance of the garden sites and creating an inviting space for the community.
  3. Assists with planting and caring for seedlings and starts.
  4. Assists with the harvest and distribution of garden produce.
  5. Takes part in the recruitment and coordination of volunteers for the garden, and provides opportunities, such as garden days for community members.
  6. Assists with the planning and implementation of the Pea Patch Initiative, including participant recruitment and delivering participant education.
  7. Manage and oversee programming associated with the Elder’s Garden Guild. This includes collaborating with Yellowhawk’s Senior Services Coordinator to develop standard operating procedures, membership recruitment, regularly attending Garden Guild gatherings, and providing members with education resources related to gardening.
  8. Collaborates with CTUIR education programs and schools to provide garden education to youth.
  9. Collaborates with the internal and external partners to identify and implement strategies for the CTUIR community that increase access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity and nutrition education.
  10. Develop and facilitate a variety of diverse physical wellness opportunities for CTUIR community that increase access to safe places for physical activity.
  11. Collect and use data to identify and implement strategies.
  12. Assist in the design, production, and dissemination of collateral marketing materials (letters, brochures, and flyers) in accordance to the Yellowhawk Public Relations Policy.
  13. Identifies areas of improvement through performance management tracking and conducts quality improvement studies.
  14. May require some grant management, data collecting and reporting.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma/equivalent.
  2. Must have the ability to complete a minimum of 40 hours of professional development pertaining to job duties and grant objectives annually.
  3. Must be able to effectively work independently and in team settings.
  4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbal communication with peers, staff, management, patients and the general public.
  5. Demonstrate ability to identify and establish professional health promotion networks that increase engagement with the community garden and healthy lifestyle choices.
  6. Demonstrate ability to develop strategic sustainable programming that increases the communities’ access to health promotion opportunities.
  7. Must be able to plan, organize and deliver general public health education.
  8. Must have and demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  9. Represents Yellowhawk with a respected and viable presence in the community.
  10. Must obtain and maintain a CPR training certification within first 90 days of employment.
  11. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain insurance requirements to operate General Services Administration vehicles.
  12. Must submit to and pass a reference and criminal background check.
  13. Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  14. Must submit proof of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Preferred Qualfications:

  1. Associate’s Degree or equivalent in related field.
  2. One (1) – two (2) years demonstrated knowledge and experience working within the CTUIR community.
  3. Experience and/or knowledge of history, culture and health needs of Native American communities preferred.
